We're coming up on 30 years since it's inception and it's still the #1 format for physical cinema, outselling Blu-Ray and Ultra HD Blu-Ray consistently.

I don't think any other physical media format in history comes close to this type of longevity.

480P is still somewhat relevant in 2025

Unless a movie benefits from Bluray scaling and sound, I buy movies on DVD because they are easier to rip and store on my Plex.

Most older movies are just find on DVD,are cheaper and take up less space.

33s are still the most popular physical audio, from the 1940s.

How does one go about doing this as opposed to ripping from a streaming source?

I ask because there are some shows and movies that I want on plex which can’t or won’t end up on streaming.

go to the library, checkout the DVD, take it home, rip it, return DVD to library.

Not what I meant.

I mean what software to rip the DVD into a format usable by Plex?

Something similar to DVD Shrink?

plex works with just about any video file format but mkv is usually the easiest.

If you want the full dvd experience, use ISOs.

Makemkv is what i typically use for ripping blu rays and dvds. It doesn't handle scratched disks very well so keep that in mind.
