So, I know this is somewhat of a highly regarded hammer film. Watched it last night.

For the first half, I was kinda wondering “what about this is unique,”.

By the end I realized, no Frankenstein retelling I’ve ever seen until this has done an effective job of painting Frankenstein as a villain.

The dynamic between Frankenstein and his tutor is excellent and the madness of Frankenstein really does feel grotesque.

The end with a deprived, crazy Cushing whose usually so composed was a delight.

Fun movie

Cushing as the villainous Frankenstein is some of Hammer's best stuff. The monsters in the Fankenstein series feel a little generic and forgettable, though, except for Lee.

The Hammer films really did a great job of convincing you of the evil that's out there. For a kid that was learning about what made certain body parts special, they weaved a strong sexual pull from the demonic side of things. It made you wonder about what came with a wild, sex filled life. You wondered how safe it might be to follow some hot chick into the woods, becuse that MF might be there.

Lee was the Dracula that caused me to keep a sharpened wooden stake between my mattress and box springs in fourth grade. I doubt a 4" stake would have been effective, but I slept better knowing it was there.
