I woke up this morning with sharp pains in my elbow and couldn't for the life of me figure out what i had hit. Then it dawned on me that I had been hitting range balls at Top Golf for an hour off of their hard mats. I hit down on the ball when i make contact and don't sweep the club except for drivers and woods.

I concluded that the concrete under the mats doesn't absorb the impact as well as natural earth, causing reverberations to travel back up through the club and into my elbow joints. Thus causing the pain I was experiencing.

Anyone else have this happen to them when hitting off of mats? Does my hypothesis hold water?

Ive been hitting off a mat this summer and i have developed a strange pain in my ring finger. I was thinking it was from new irons.

This is a good possibility.

My cousin experienced the same sharp pains in the elbow as well. His lasted for weeks and he even went to the doctor about it.

His pain was in his left elbow. He's left handed. Mine is in my right elbow. I'm right handed. We both are steep into the ball. Him more so.

I’m fairly steep in my downswing and I’m not a fan of mats. I do tend to get pains in my right hand and elbow using them too much.

Thats certainly a thing. Basically tennis elbow from the unforgiving mat.

Definitely a problem for those who tend to take deep divots. I had to quit hitting on mats because of L wrist pain.

I hit off of a mat regularly in my back yard. I think mats can be more forgiving on really fat shots as far as getting the ball up. It'll be shorter than a clean shot, but not as short as a really fat shot on turf. But on the flip side, on shallow/barely fat shots or steep swings, I find my mat can be a quite grabby on the club compared to turf. I get some hand pain if I get into a rhythm hitting a ton of balls for a few days. I'm usually not nearly steep enough that I feel issues from impact on the mat.

Seems no matter swing style/type, continued mat practice we likely result in some kind of pain or discomfort.

Simply from the mat bouncing the club or ball and its interaction together...

Any mat on a concrete or hard surface will likely lead to some discomfort in the wrist or elbows. The bottom is hard and the mat generally grabs a little bit.

All mats are not equal. Cheap mats tend to cause more joint pain because there is a harder cheaper base. Some of the better more expensive mats tend to mimic real grass better. No mats are as safe as real grass though.
