Hotels, fuel, eating out, and you have to have the greatest stuff
So it’s just like travel baseball

LYBN (Louisiana Youth Bass Nation) is too strict in my opinion. They treat kids like adults and the rules are a little harsh if this is truly about getting kids to continue the tradition of tournament fishing or fishing in general.
Basstactix to me is a WAY BETTER organization and is not near as restrictive as LYBN with way better prizes for the kids. And captains/coaches can fish in back boat.
To me tournament fishing is nothing like play fishing cause you are fighting time, the fish and other anglers (theoretically speaking).
It can be intimidating but don’t let it get to you or your kid, just go fish and what happens happens.
My 2 sons fish both organizations but we have been fishing clubs and open tournaments for years.

I have a son that did the high school deal and even through college. It was good because it was what he really was passionate about instead of what someone else thought he should be doing. I think that you are about at the worst part of it because you have to be physically involved all the time. It is very expensive but also very rewarding. We built a bond and level of trust in the boat that is still there today. He's actually a much better fisherman today than I am. Overall, it is worth it but some things aren't fun, like sitting in the boat in the rain watching him fish.

What is the travel ball equivalent of buying and maintaining the boat?

It's much more expensive than travel ball if you own the boat and are the captain. If your son simply fishes with a friend and his dad, then it can be fairly cheap for you. Pay the captains fuel bill and call it a day.
Time wise it's what you make of it. We have some teams that just don't scout at all and only fish the day of the tournament and others that put 8 to 10 days on the water scouting per tournament.
As far as rules/registration/background checks, the first tournament of the year is the worst. It gets much easier from then on.
Side note - Some of the tournament launch site locations suck for actual fishing, Lake Maurepas is one example. They choose locations in an attempt to get the young anglers experience with a variety of fishing styles, river fishing, marsh, reservoirs, etc... which is a great idea, but the fishing can be pretty hard on young anglers in a few of the locations.
He will be a significantly better fisherman if he does the circuit for 4 years, and your wallet will be lighter, but he will always remember "those days"
Good luck Saturday...

I know you asked Mack but I’ll give my opinion, WAY too many boaters! Ridiculous to have that many contestants on 1 body of water. Not surprised at all there was an accident Friday. Either should have a cutoff number or break tournament up into 2 days.
The other thing that irks me is 90% of the field fished the spillway side and every bass was released behind the damn store. I know every tournament held there does that but man that’s a lot of fish taken from 1 side and relocated on the other.
End of day boys had a small limit and had fun so it was a success I suppose.

I would bet there are hundreds of bass floating in that canal behind the store. It was stagnant and black. No oxygen in it

Yeah, not good, they need to fix that.

Not to split hairs, but the drone pics I saw seemed like both sides were about equal in # of boats.
