Saints Preseason Opener: Tipton’s Big Play, QB Battle Heats Up

The scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story.
Here’s what we learned from the Saints’ preseason opener.
QB Battle – Tyler Shough bounced back from a pick-six with a 54-yard TD to Mason Tipton, while Spencer Rattler moved well but couldn’t finish drives. The order could flip next week vs. Jacksonville.
Mason Tipton – Carried his camp dominance into the game with that 54-yard score.
Velus Jones Jr. – HAS WHEELS. He's dangerous on returns (73 yds on 2 attempts) but must prove he can impact at WR.
Torricelli Simpkins – Played 64 snaps after Clapp’s injury. Could be a roster lock, especially if Clapp’s out long-term.
Defensive standouts – Sacks from Khristian Boyd, Fadil Diggs, and Chris Rumph. Boyd nearly had a safety.
Injuries – Penning, Clapp, Bub Means, and Pline all left the game.
It’s preseason — vanilla schemes, new systems, and missing starters. The real Saints will take shape in the coming weeks.

If part of the plan with the offense is to make Shaheed more of a weapon as the #2 WR, couldn't that open up the roster spot for Jones to be the primary returner as long as he can become a minor contributor in the offense?

I think that's where we're headed, but I also think he's far from a lock. Showing he can contribute in the passing game could absolutely make him a lock, though.
