Right calf. Pulled while running. Finished the run with slight noticeable pain.

No bruising or pain currently but I do feel that the calf is a bit tight. I have been taking anti-inflammatory meds and I iced it several times yesterday.

I am setting an appointment with a PT in order to get some advice on stretches etc. that I can do and incorporate into my daily life. I'm 45 and this is my second soft tissue injury in the last year (groin tear last October that completely shut me down).

I feel like I might be able to swing only taking a few days off. Anyone have any experience with this. Again, I know it's not anything significant at this point I just don't want it lingering while I am building up towards these races in the next few months. Thanks, guys.

I just posted a similar issue a few weeks ago but never updated what happened after the injury.

Here was my experience:

- Doc did an x ray and said nothing was noticeably wrong in terms of surgery or needing a boot

- Started PT the next day as the pain was much less and I was feeling more mobile. PT did a full range of basic stretches because they felt I was mostly tight, leading to the injury.

- I would say the PT helped a lot, but if you have any knowledge of mobility, you'll have more options for stretching than they'll provide. I do think the stretching helped a lot, but considering the price, it wasn't worth it. My pain subsided and I felt much more mobile and comfortable walking within days of doing the PT stretches daily.

- Continued appointments with PT has been redundant and a waste of money IMO. I'm going to a place with great reviews, but the stretches are really simple. I communicated that I had a lot of experience with fitness (strength, aerobic conditioning, and mobility) but everything they're doing seems algorithmic. We even talked last time we met about spending our last few appointments working on some other things since my calf felt better. But last time I was there, even though I said my calf was completely fine, we spent an hour doing the same simple stretches. I'm sure there's a protocol for being cautious and safe with it, but it was still disappointing that he said I seemed all better but did the same routine. He was also juggling three other patients.

If you're not dealing with any post-surgical healing, I would go to PT once to see what they suggest and then do your own routine at home.

Rest. Myofascial release (go with massage or a massage gun, avoid a foam roller for now) on the calf muscles that are away from the injury. Most strains/injuries happen at the musculoskeletal junction (where the muscle transforms into the tendon), so using myofascial on the muscle won't be too hard on the injury. It will decrease the tension which will help with the formation of scar tissue.

Transverse friction massage over the area you suspect the strain is. YouTube the technique. Do this multiple times a day for 1 minute each spot.

Absolutely no eccentrics. Strains, for the most part, are injuries caused by a strong eccentric load. So using eccentrics can injure it even greater. After the scar tissue is laid down, you may have some lingering pain/discomfort. This is when you use eccentrics and transverse friction massage to reform the tissue into a better matrix.

Hope that helps.

About 2 months ago I had the exact situation.

Increased my volume of running and strained my right calve. Figured it would go away after a few days, but it kept coming back. Decided to go to PT for the first time in my life, and restrained it while I was there demonstrating the pain. Ha.

I had 3 visits with them and did home stretching and didn't run for 5 weeks. Since then, so far so good. Came very close to trying out the BPC-157 as well.

For 2 of those weeks, I was out of the country and was averaging 15k steps a day too. There is hope.

I’m getting back on the jogging trail after dealing with a painful IT Band issue in early April. An MD told me a couple of specific stretches and exercises and said PT folks could show me more but he said I should only go a few times and then continue on my own.

YouTube has many helpful videos, too.
