What’s up with podiatrists?

I’ve never understood how they can do orthopedic type surgeries on feet and they aren’t MD’s.
My wife broke a couple bones in her R foot,podiatrist did surgery,put in some plates and screws.It turned out well so no complaints.
Just seems strange to me.
