The stains are often caused by the chemical ingredient avobenzone, which is common in many sunscreens, and can react with iron in the water or on the fabric, leading to rust-colored or yellow stains.

I have ruined so many golf shirts with spray-on sunblock and other various stains. I get that brown color all around the collar and down the front. I sweat a lot. It's been really hot..

I've tried the white rub on sunscreen too. Seems all sunscreens stain my shirts brown. Every little thing stains them..

Do you guys pretreat your golf shirts with stain remover and/or presoak them after the round? Does that help with staining?

I just try to remember to wash whatever shirt I wear right when I get home from the course.

Sounds like you need to invest in some brown golf shirts

Make a mixture of lemon juice and salt to get sunscreen stains out

I'm guessing the stains are set in shirts that I've already wash and dried yeah??

Most likely but give it a shot and let it soak for awhile, I use a toothbrush for the “paste”

Blue lizard and other natural sunscreens don’t contain avobenzone and they won’t stain

I have zero issue with stains. My biggest problem is perma-stink in performance fabrics. So far, using Persil and white vinegar is the best strategy I have found.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Which brand shirts to do wear? I used to get that with “cheaper” shirts like PGA Tour brand and Callaway. This has never been an issue with Peter Milar and a few other premium brands that I have worn. I think it’s a fabric specific issue.

Any of my lighter Peter Milar shirts will stain like crazy as described above if I don't immediately wash them after the round

I am all over the place with brands. I have not noticed a trend on that yet. The ones I specifically remember include UA and Callaway, but despite the cheapness of the cally's, they are amongst my most comfortable of fabrics.

Well, that’s your answer. It’s the type of fabric Calaway uses. My brother wears those and expertises the same thing with smell.

Right now is the last days Peter Millar’s Summer sale (50% off plus another 20%). Order yourself a summer comfort and see if it smells after a few washes. I bet it doesn’t.

I have a few Millar. I have experienced this with so many, that I just don't accept your theory, yet.

All Vineyard Vines golf shirts. Decent quality shirts I guess.. They're light and stretchy.

Try using the sun,

rinse in cold water
pre-treat with dawn
let it sit in the sun for 10-15 minutes

you can also use baking soda or cornstarch, sprinkle that on the spot if its oily/greasy, let it sit for about 30 minutes then brush it off
wash in warm water
lay it out in the sun after washing

you can try OxiClean detergents and then the sun

Just some options to try but the sun works pretty good on stains

My mom’s tried and true stain and stink remedies…. That woman was an all-around household wizard, God rest her beautiful soul.
Laundry stains: use a nice spray bottle, pour half blue Dawn and half peroxide. Mix and wait a day or so for the blue dye to subside. Usually makes a light purple color. Use it on any stain or area that you are worried about. You can spray it when you take clothes off, kind of pre-treat. It will take red wine out of khaki shorts 100%. I know for a fact.

Gym smells: my mom would buy cheap vodka and mix in a spray bottle half & half with water. She sprayed our cleats, shoes, football pads, undershirts, workout clothes. I have one in my gym bag today and spray my clothes as soon as I take them off. Keeps the stench away. A cup of vinegar in the washing machine can help take smells out as well.
This works for me. Hopefully you find it helpful gentlemen.

This is dawn power wash. I've made my own, but much easier to just buy it.

The Downy rinse and refresh seems to be working fantastic for this (and for towels smelling musty).

Agree with the guys above re shirt quality though. My nicer shirts don't seem to hold the stink as well as cheaper ones. None of my PM's has ever had a smell post wash.
