TV dialogue sounds garbled …

First time posting on tech board.
I have a TV (Samsung TV/Onkyo Receiver) that came with a vacation home we just purchased. Not my setup. I’ve noticed it’s hard to understand the dialogue on the TV even when the volume is up. It’s like the dialogue is muffled or indistinct inspite of being loud. It’s not just me, caught my teen and her friends with the CC on just so they could follow a show.
I seem to remember a long time ago reading it could be a sound setting ( like surround sound, when supporting speakers aren’t present ).
Thoughts appreciated.

Ya turn off any audio features and if still bad get soundbar with adjustable center channel.

Check the TV menu sound setup. Might be that the TV speakers and the external speakers are enabled simultaneously.

95% possibility it's a signal error.

My Integra receiver... (upscale onkyo) will randomly garble the audio. I turn it off and turn it back on and its fine again.
