A good friends son is going to be stationed at Elmendorf for August and wants to go catch some Salmon or something. He is a great kid and Naval Academy graduate, who flies those damn Ospreys so he is risking his life for his country daily.

He is an ok fisherman but not great, but a Yes Sir and No Sir kid that will try to do whatever you tell him.

He is also interested in hiking trips particularly around Mountain McKinley. Any advice appreciated and will be passed along. I have seen enough Missing in Alaska shows to tell his mom absolutely no solo camping or hiking or anything. (Lol)

For fishing, Cooper Landing on the Kenai River is about 2 hours outside of Anchorage. We did a guided trip with Cooper Landing Fish Camp and caught Dolly Varden, Rainbow Trout and Salmon.

Hiking in Denali is unique. There aren't many established trails like in other national parks. There's a single road through the park on which buses run. So you board a bus. Get off where you want to hike. Then get back on the bus when you're done.

Mind you it was 28 yrs ago, but my grand parents took me up to stay with some of their friends for a couple of weeks. I remember fishing somewhere close to downtown Anchorage that was under a bridge/railroad something. But we used salmon eggs as bait and caught a bunch. This was around the 4th of July when we were up there.

I've done the same except used the Alaska River Adventures outfitters and stayed at the Eagle Landing.

Cooper Landing. When you drive into town there’s nothing but fish processors and guide outfits everywhere. That’s how I knew I was in the right place. If not cooper landing then somewhere along the Kenai River.
