Any recommendations for or against spending a 4th of July weekend in Kennebunkport, Maine? We want to take our kids up there next year for the 250th birthday of the good ol’ USA. Any info on the crowds and how crowded it will be in that area of Maine south of Portland?

My wife and I went in May a few years ago and we loved it - no crowds and we went up and down the southern coast to all the small towns at our leisure.

I didn’t dislike it when I went there, but I found it to be crowded and touristy. Just my opinion. Seems like it would be insane that weekend.

ETA: Plenty of great places in Maine that I would pick first.

Gotcha, so what other places in Maine would you recommend for next year’s 4th of July?

I’m in Camden right now. I’d recommend Camden/Rockland over Kennebunkport. But I do love Portland.

A couple of ideas: Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth is very nice. Pretty coastal setting with access to a nice state park beach. Can be in downtown Portland in 15 minutes. Will be expensive and will probably have a multi- night minimum that time of year. You can easily drive to Kennebunkport or go north.

The Camden/Rockport area is also very nice. Mid-coast Maine.

Plenty of other places. Do some research. It’s a great state.

Seconded. This is where we stay when we go to Portland.
