5-ton Coolant switchover summer hell?

Our 9-yrold system with 1 year left in warranty developed a coil coolant leak two weeks ago. A replacement coil must use a newer coolant. The original estimate was the required coil would be available this week. Now we know that is not happening. The well-established installer keeps topping us off with Freon about every 3 days.
Is anybody else facing this problem or has out "reliable" installer become a con artist? I'm afraid to think how much they will charge for all the freon reloads.

Why does a repair require a refrigerant change? A quick google search says this shouldn't be the case

No, that should not be the case if the leak is in the evaporator coil (unit inside the house, low pressure side) and not the condensor coil (outside unit, high pressure side). If the leak is in the outside coil (and that might the case with refrigerant having to be added every 3 days) a replacement R410A condensing unit may not be available.
Do you know what coil the leak is in?

Leak is in evaporator coil in the attic. Unit is Lennox. Story from installer is that two problems are occurring at the same time. 1. Coolant change over, 2. Tarriff/custom problems. This particular Lennox was made in Mexico.

(You) Get the model number from the cabinet and search for an evaporator that will fit it.

9 year old unit is going to be R410A refrigerant. R410A replacement coils and R410A refrigerant supply (expensive yes) is not an issue. I may be failing to understand, but something just isn’t sounding right to me. Yes R410A system are no longer being made per federal regulations, but the vast majority of residential HVAC in the USA are R410A systems that can serviced & repaired for the foreseeable future.
To my knowledge there is nothing unique about Lennox evaporator coils, though I could be wrong. Many major HVAC manufacturers have their evap coils made by 3rd party vendors/manufacturers, not sure about Lennox. I suppose the warranted replacement coil (are you the original purchaser/owner of the HVAC system? the coil should have a 10 year warranty if you are the original purchaser and the unit was registered with the manufacturer, though you’d pay for labor & refrigerant) may not be in stock but if that’s the case he should tell you so.
Are they trying to sell you a new system? That often done for units 10 years +, as the average life span of a HVAC system in the Deep South is 13-15 years. You’re not at 10, but you are close.

With more research I found that Lennox settled a class action lawsuit against them for leak-prone evaporator coils that covered parts, labor and coolant some units bought in and before 2015. Lucky us... we bought ours in 2016. There is a year to run on warranty, but it's not covered by the settlement.
Installer hasn't suggested a new system yet... but patience is running thin.

R410a systems cannot be installed per federal regulations. However, R410a equipment can be manufactured until the end of time. You can replace your R410a condenser in 2040 if someone makes it. Same with your evaporator coil or air handler. The OP's issue is Lennox isn't manufacturing R410a coils so they're dependent on a 3rd party (ADP, which Lennox owns) to build their legacy coils for warranty replacement....probably. The various ICM 3rd party folks are probably building all of the large OEM legacy coils so they're likely unable to keep up with demand. They have their own issues with material availability and production capacities.
