Was talking to someone about the transfer portal and NIL and the question came up, What % of college athletes actually are passionate about the school they are playing for vs going to highest bidder. I’d say 75/25 on the money side. What say you?

Who gives a shite? I’m not passionate about the company I work for but I cash a paycheck.

I am not disagreeing with the athletes. All I am saying is for the alumni/fans of the schools does it really mean something if your school wins a natty. Are they really representing your school?

Auburn seems to love their Natty that the paid Cam for. Same for Jameis. Same for Herschel. Same for Reggie. This is nothing new. The only difference is now all teams can buy players. I love it.

I don’t understand what is supposed to make a player so passionate about a fricking school. Many of the players, especially at the more successful programs, come from other states and (NIL aside) sign mainly because of the coach and how they can fit in the program at a given time.
They aren’t third generation Bama or UGA or LSU fans who go to the same school as dad and grandpa because it doesn’t really make a shite where they get their business degree and they have plenty of time to figure life out.
These players have a short window to maximize the genetic lottery ticket that is their athletic ability and set themselves up financially for life. Passion for a school is at the bottom of the list of priorities.
But the schools are no different. Let Alabama fans choose between a 3 star legacy from Tuscaloosa County High School or a 5 star #1 recruit from Mater Dei and let’s see how much loyalty we can find for the local boy.
The fans only care about winning, and the players only care about their future. Anyone who expects different is going to get their feelings hurt.

You nailed it. My team passed up about 50 QB’s in the metro ATL area to buy a guy who probably never watched a game by the team he now runs. Loyalty does not and should not exist in sports. It’s all about maximizing their small window to make money. The coaches are the smart ones. Glorified PE teachers somehow outsmarted school Presidents to get paid more and often times the highest paid public employee in the state. And they can do it for decades and the taxpayers eat it up. Coaches are the smartest ones in this entire scheme.
