Really missing Sherwood

If only it could’ve hung on for another 8 years or so. The demand seems high enough now where we could really use another 18 hole public course in the city.

You could say this about any one of Sherwood, Shenandoah, Fairwood, or Briarwood

Demand wasn’t high enough 10 years ago? I think it definitely was.

thing about Sherwood, Shenandoah and Fairwood is people bought homes on the golf course but didn't support the golf course...
Briarwood was always a leased piece of property until Woman's Hospital may the guy that owned it a offer he couldn't refuse...
I miss them too...

Sherwood wasn’t shut down because of lack of demand. It was shut down because the city of BR took half the property thru eminent domain for some type of flood control structure that they still haven’t started work on

Was a cool course, had great greens when it was in its prime.
Had a cool clubhouse too.

Interest in golf cratered after the Tiger boom faded. We had a handful of courses and driving ranges close around here too that would be nice to have back now.

i was the superintendent when it closed. your statement is true but untrue as well. that wasnt the reason for the shutdown but its the reason it wasnt reopened by the current owner

Sherwood ran out of money. Plain and simple. I joined in its last few years and it was unbelievably cheap, as they were trying to get more members. There wasn’t enough membership to keep it going. Loved that course and yes, wish it were still around.

yep, the amount of debt was killing them. they were barely able to pay the monthly interest on the debt. they tried to renegotiate the debt but the bank wasn't having it which i don't blame them.

Don’t forget Fairwood, Fairwood Country Club was fun

Baton Rouge is a cemetery for golf and always will be. No public golf can compete with brec courses which are tax funded.
