How did the SALT cap increase in the bill overnight?

How can 3 GOP reps from deep blue states have this much sway?

House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a last-minute rebellion from conservatives on Republicans’ megabill, with a deal on a key tax deduction with blue-state Republicans and a lack of progress on settling other key provisions frustrating hard-liners.
“I think actually we’re further away from a deal because that SALT cap increase, I think, upset a lot of conservatives,” Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), the House Freedom Caucus chair, said in an interview on Newsmax on Wednesday morning, referring to the state-and-local-tax deduction. “The conservatives are pushing for some balancing spending reductions.”

2. Slim margin in House. Defections in the committee means more defections in the chamber vote that can't withstand the slim margins.

I'm torn on this defecting members personally:
A) they are doing what they should be doing and that is representing the needs of their constituents. Their constituents are in deep blue, high-tax states where they do benefit from SALT.
B) The committee is not where to do this, it is an over-use of power. In debate and floor votes- yes. The committee is not just for your constituents; the floor is. It is over-representation for deep blue states.
C) So their constituents get SALT in their high-tax state. Pay their taxes in their blue state. Deduct it from Fed taxes, pay less Fed taxes. Tax reductions for rest of country go down. Net effect: rest of country is paying deep blue high-tax state.

Complete bullshite. Just allowing the Dems in those states relief from their own policies.

Cap the SALT deductions at no more than $15K. Then sunset them entirely in 5 years. Don't give those states a reason to never fix their shite.

It's bullshite. If people in some states can deduct their state taxes from their federal taxes then people in all 50 states should be able to do the same.

Trump was right about it rewarding blue state governors. The GOP reps from those states don’t care though. Same old shite.

quote:and this is where I get torn regarding those reps. Take Lawler for example, his constituents would benefit greatly from a high-cap SALT; in fact, his position is 'no cap SALT'. He SHOULD petition/debate what is best for his constituents ONLY in a repetitive republic. BUT, if the needs of the rest of the country are greater he loses in arguing his position in a representative republic. That IS the point. The rest of the country should not be punished for his constituents and the form of government 'organically' takes care of that. He is short circuiting that in committee.

He makes the point that he is a R in a district that went for Kamala to bolster his point. He doesn't realize that IS the point- his constituents keep voting for Dems so they should not get that tax relief at the cost of the rest of us. It doesn't make the point he thinks it does. His constituents caused this.
ETA: this is the state that voted in AG James twice who now will have her legal defense paid for by these very same taxes they want relief for.
ETA #2: this is also the same state that is waiting to sentence Trump on 34 felony counts and thereby, one could claim, is attempting to exert undue and illegal influence over the President so that they benefit from arguments such as this SALT argument.

Where’s the call for “paying their fair share” now? Just trying to give them what they’ve asked for.
