SO vs K in baseball

Are these abbreviations considered interchangeable? It’s always been my understanding that SO was a stat just for batters/hitting, and K was reserved just for pitchers/pitching.

I think it’s officially SO in the official statistics and record books for both pitchers and batters.
From my understanding, some old timer score keeper started using K and it’s became synonymous ever since.
I do personally tend to think of a pitcher have 10K’s in a game and a batter having 2 strikeouts.

As I was trying to find an answer to my own question, I read that he started to use the K to avoid any confusion between a strikeout and “S” for sacrifice.

Backward K means the hitter didn’t swing at the third strike.

How do you score a strike out on clock violation?

I like both.
