I am going to plant soybeans in a couple weeks for a food plot. Any suggestions? I’ve read multiple places you do not have to fertilize, is that correct? Any information would be appreciated.

You probably don’t need to fertilize due to the deer eating them as fast as they sprout up.
How many acres are you planting? Anything less than 3-5 acers will get hammered as fast as they sprout and it kills the plant if it’s before the first leaves.
You can fence it with a hot wire for a couple of weeks if only an acre or less.

Yes that’s right. Soybeans do not need fertilizing.

I do agree they’re going to get hammered when that first trifoliate appears and you’ll struggle to get an established stand.

You can fence it off or there’s stuff that you can spray to keep them off of it for 2-3 weeks, but it’s expensive. I have had success doing it though. We’ll spray some borders that are problem areas and definitely net out positively.

Pointless unless your plot is 3+ acres or have like 1 deer

Yup, tried it once, deer ate every seedling. Had to come back and replant the plot .

Sounds like a successful food plot?

Planted for the deer and they ate it all

OP needs to state whether he is trying to help the deer out (food plot) or have a food source to shoot a deer over (kill plot)

Electric fence, 2 layers 3’ apart. Use the poly tape rather than wire. It “vibrates” in the wind adding another element of deterrence.

Ground is everything on electric fences. Use at least 3 grounds rods 5 foot apart. TSC sells the copper clad ground rods.

That’s a whole lotta work just for the plot to last maybe 5 nights.

The only thing that I’ve seen really work and can take a pounding is American Joint Vetch. It’s expensive but last up until the 1st frost. Can maybe plant clay pea/soybean with it so deer eat that right away instead of young sprouts of vetch.

Sunhemp can take a pounding and is tough as nails.
