My nephew is graduating high school about a year from now and my sister has asked for some assistance in considering options.

This will be his senior trip, and he will be 18. We can confidently say he's a good kid who has almost never gone outside the lines. The goal is to grant him grown up freedoms in a somewhat protected environment.

Looking at all-inclusives in a tropical destination with activities that any group of 3-4 18 year old boys would enjoy.

The golf is essentially just for me.

Appreciate any recommendations.

The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 so the first decision comes down to understanding that. Just want to 100% make sure you and your sister are considering this in his "freedoms".

I honestly think most "good" kids that age would prefer a cruise unless they're just looking to get drunk. AIs, in general, just don't offer much inside the resort for kids that age and don't normally have alot of other teens there at that age.

That being said, if the AI is the route you both want to go, understanding you're giving 18 year old kids free range to all the alcohol they can get, Breathless and Temptation Cancun both generally have younger clientele and are considered more "party" resorts.

Our boy is graduating this month and has no trip planned. For whatever reason, mostly that he goes off to college on June 1st, none of the boys graduating wanted to do anything.

We sure weren’t going to plan it.

You are going with them? Ouch. I would send them alone if you want them to have grown up freedoms.

This will be a group of 3-4 families that are all pretty tight. These aren't choir boys, but I would be my left testicle that between the 4 boys, only 1 of them has any moderate experience with alcohol- i legitimately dont think this is being naive.

When I graduated back in the late 90's as an 18 year old, we got shipped off to cancun to get hammered drunk and tried to make out with the hot chaperone moms.

They may very well get to a 'family friendly' all inclusive and get rip roaring drunk all day every day - which is not really what we're going for...more a semi-controlled/protected opportunity to figure some stuff out.

Thus, looking for something good for adults, and good for older teens. These kids do love to hang on the beach, talk to girls, and eat good food.

May as well just rent a house in Seaside and give them a portion of it. Drinks only go in plastic containers if you’re outside of the house, and visitors are kept to a minimum.

My son’s been at a small town all-boys school for 6 years…so him moving to Gainesville and being there all summer is going to be a real eye opener. Co-ed luxury condos just off campus…those girls barely dress for class, can’t imagine how this is going to go.

Look at any of the resorts in the Playa Mujeres area, just north of Cancun. We have stayed at Excellence, Atelier and Dreams. All are highly recommended. But, for a younger crowd, of those three i would recommend Excellence.

Cancun AI options are all fine. However for 18 year old dudes I would consider Tulum (some AI's there too) or Costa Rica (but not Jaco, well unless they really want to party).

Tulum will have better food and more party options not limited to just the resort. Costa Rica I would consider Tamarindo. Its a medium-sized surfer City on the beach and they could do excursions every day, hiking, horse rides, ATVs, fishing, or just screwing around on the beach.

Both will be more likely to have college-aged women around to have fun with that a random Cancun AI.

Give him an option of AIs or a cruise. Find a few resorts and a couple of ships/itineraries to see which one he likes. They’ll all have a blast no matter which one they choose.

You have to be 21 to drink on the cruise. However, the parents can purchase alcohol for their kids which might be smarter since you’re not sure how they’ll handle it.

My kids entire class went to Hard Rock in the Dominican Republic.
Parents went too. We stayed in a different wing of the resort. It was a blast.
It will probably be full of other kids there at that time. Drinking age is 18. Pool parties . Maybe lots of hot girls around their age. Seemed safe. Food was decent. Wasn’t that expensive.
