Wow the Catholic coach must be an incredible coach if he is taking over at Gilman. Nice to see that the game continues to grow in Louisiana!

Can you explain the D1 vs D2? I saw Jesuit has teams in both D1 and D2. What determines D1 or D2?

D2 is basically JV. Teams that are in newer programs, smaller school with limited players, or in The case you referenced- a large school with an established program that has enough younger players to play and compete I. Division 2.

Holy Cross is in D2, they have had a lacrosse team for several years

D2 was created so that smaller programs could be more competitive and have more playing opportunities, as opposed to almost always getting eliminated early on in district playoffs by bigger programs.
See also Central and Dutchtown. Not sure if they still have lacrosse teams, only because I’ve been out of the loop for a while.

The most recent leadership in LHSLL has established some guidelines to help teams work to continue to build.
The main guidelines now is new/existing teams to join the LHSLL get 3 years to play on the D2 level. At the end of that 3 years they will then promote to D1. Waivers can be submitted to remain at D2 for another year or 2 which is voted on by the league coaches. Reasons to stay at D2 can be due to low overall program numbers, a large graduating class with mostly a small/medium sized underclass coming back, lack of school/institutional support, etc.
Schools with larger programs that are able to field a D1, D2, JV, & even a Freshman team are allowed to do so. In these instances, a D2 Team at a D1 school has roster limitations, primarily they need to treat it like a JV & not field seniors.
chools can choose to start with a freshman team & grow from there. In this instance, they can play a freshman only schedule or a hybrid freshman/D2 schedule or an all D2 schedule.
What the state is in dire need of is more middle school aged lacrosse that feeds directly into high schools. Holy Cross, Brother Martin, Shaw, & Rummel are at a particular disadvantage in the NOLA area with no direct middle school feeder system. So, they are essentially starting over every year or 2. Recently, Brother Martin seems to have been growing with a little more success in house.

Coach George Hopkins is an alumnus of The Gilman School as well as D3 Franklin & Marshall.
He has lead Catholic to 6 straight semifinals & a state title.
For the last few years he has grown the CHS program to field a D1, D2, & Freshman teams. Here & there they even had enough players for a 2nd JV team.
He has also worked to develop strong summer lacrosse for Catholic High players.
I do no envy the individual tasked to follow him at CHS.

VSN Highlights on IG
Newman with their 1st ever state title appearance, battled all game keeping the score tight. Jesuit leaned on their roster experience & St. Attackman Wilson F. who won his 3rd State Title Offensive MVP Award.

You're welcome & you're right.
The LHSLL has really stepped up their game with scores + weekly awards info on social media.
If teams can keep the info sharing rolling along the sport will continue to grow in LA.
There's a good chance we see 3-5+ new HS teams joining the league within the next 2-3 years. Steady growth will welcome to see.
