Hitting the Oaks on Friday and then the Derby on Saturday. Meeting up with guys I went through OCS and flight school with.
Must see/do? Must avoid?
More importantly, horses to throw some money on?

Go Hunter S Thompson style, full of blotter acid and wild turkey.

I would hope we are going to have something more Derby worthy than Turkey.

It’s a pageant of upper society ran by criminals.

Are you going to be in the stands or midfield? Two completely different animals.
I don’t know how things are now, but back in the 90’s, if you had good Mardi Gras beads on the midfield, you go to see lots of titties.

The Derby’s a total crapshoot, man. You’ve got 20 horses going a distance they’ve never run before, against a field size they’ll never see again — and for most of them, they won’t ever do either again for the rest of their careers.
Anyone saying they know who’s going to win is kidding themselves. Betting horses has been my side gig for a few years now — and while I can make educated guesses that pay off over time, the Derby is a total minefield.
Journalism will almost certainly go off as the favorite, and probably deserves to.
Hopefully the Baffert horses soak up a ton of money and give us some great value elsewhere.
I think there’s a good shot we get a price this year. I’m comfortable tossing about 10 of them… though in a chaotic race like the Derby, even the ones you toss can sometimes benefit from some crowded field shenanigans or a wild pace.
I haven’t finished breaking it down with the MPH/Sartin method yet — I’ll update this post once I do.
But soak it in, man. It’s going to be awesome. Hopefully we get good weather. I still haven’t made it to the Derby yet myself. The family and I were at Churchill for their fall meet and had a blast. Did Saratoga last summer too.
One day we’ll check the Derby off the list.

In the stands. Not sure the wives in the group would appreciate the atmosphere in midfield.

Getting there Thursday evening and not leaving til Monday, so should be able to hit a few of those. Thanks.

Avoid the infield. Depending on where you are, bet a race or 2 early. Though the last time I was there the lines were much more manageable.

I've been 2-3 times before. Enjoyed it when it was sunny, but last time I went there was a downpour and I haven't been back since.

Is there any other way to go?

Looking like some showers Friday morning but Derby is going to be mostly sunny with a high of 70 with a breeze.

I'd stay off 4th Street Live (several places have closed down there) and head over to NuLu (Main Street). West Sixth has a nice setup with the courtyard.
OP, whereabouts are you staying while here? That'll help with giving you some places to eat in the area outside of the Downs.
Keep in mind anything upscale is going to be booked solid, especially downtown.
