Offline Trail Cam?

What is the best bang for buck for an offline trail cam that I can use to identify trespassers? I have experience in the surveillance business but it's office-space type stuff. Having it connected to verizon for remote viewing is a luxury, but not a necessity for my purposes. It's not something I want to view live necessarily, but when I go to this piece of property and see clear evidence someone has been fricking around, I want to be able to review snapshots.
I want multiple of these. Based on functionality, cost, ease of use, what can you all recommend to me?
Use-case: a neighborhood lake/pond is getting vandalized once or twice a year. Volunteers clean up after it and that's the end. I want to personally subsidize a solution to bust the people.

I hate to be the guy that disagrees with your request, and I’m not someone that runs a ton of cams. But in your scenario I would highly recommend a cell cam. They really aren’t that expensive and your time is probably worth it. Best part about a cell cam is the daily photo to know it’s working and aimed in the right spot. There’s nothing worse than driving an hour to check a camera only to find out it wasn’t working, a branch made it take 10,000 photos of nothing, etc.
When it comes to security it’s worth it to know instantly when there’s a trespasser.

It would be a one minute drive to check the camera, and I'd only want to check it when I go to the lake myself, see evidence of recent frickery, and have some cameras to reference. I know the obvious benefit of more sophisticated systems, I've been certified in them. But I'm looking for bare bones here.

If you want a cell camera go with tactacam
If you want a regular one go with browning

What about a situation where the cameras aren't there when you go to check - you wouldn't even know when they were taken, much less have any evidence of who or when. Just saying...

Yes, I am aware of this risk.

They have many models. Can you help me narrow one down?

This. Ive 2 Tactacam Reveal 2.0 cameras, and 2 Browning cameras. No problems with either of them.
Stay away from the Wildgame Innovations crap.
Mount up high pointed downward or expect them to be stolen by trespassers.

I'm still running some old Brownings in addition to my cell cameras. They refuse to die. I have no clue how old one of them is. It looks terrible - been chewed on by squirrels - but it just keeps spitting out pics.

I think the ones I have are strike force models. I’ve had them for several years and like someone else said they refuse to die.

My covert cameras have GPS built in….
I’ve used it to locate one I forgot exactly where I stuck it out in the woods

I’d recommend cell cam.

I've been on Browning's site browsing but I can't find where I can preview an instruction manual to see how these things actually operate. Do you remove the SD card, take it home and use your own SD card reader to view images? This sounds like a dumb question, but I promise more dumb questions to come later. Also, they all seem to come SIM chipped which I won't be using, so does that mean if it comes with a SIM chip then the only way to get the imagery is through a service plan?

If you don’t want or need cell service then go to Amazon and find the cheapest one that balances image quality with good reviews. In this day and age any non-cell cam is going to be cheap and will contain the same guts whether you pay for a name or not.
Yes you will need to retrieve the SD card and put it into a standalone reader to view the pics, unless it specifically mentions having a built in screen to view pics. You may or may not opt for that, but to view the pics at high enough quality to ID someone you’ll need to pull the card most likely. A screen would let you quickly scan to see if anyone has been there.

Are they encoded in any way where I'd have to download their (browning in this case) software to view them, or I can just open them in MP4 or whatever generic format with any generic image viewing program on my windows computer? Would they still be day/time stamped?

They’re going to be a common file format that any windows laptop can open. I’ve never heard of a company using some kind of encryption that only their app can open, but I guess never say never.
The bigger challenge these days is finding a laptop that has an onboard SD card reader. If yours does then 99.99% chance you’re gonna be able to pop it in and go.
