"Jay Johnson is “hopeful but not certain” that Deven Sheerin returns to the mound this season.
He threw a bullpen on Thursday."
For the 99% of you that assumed he was certainly out for the year.

Gavin had a lingering issue. Deven is 9-months post ACL surgery and is ramping up his arm like any other pitcher would.

Look I love Jay as our HC but its been proven over time that Jay is prone to speak with exageration and in best case scenarios. Not all the time but often. In his short time at LSU, he has coached/recruited multiple "best player he has ever seen".
Love Jay, you have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

The only evidence you need here is that he recently threw a bullpen. Then, it is about how he recovers and if his knee/body feels regular after the bullpen. This is not about "taking it with a grain of salt", it is the truth that Sheerin is likely to return this season.

Sheerin is only a 2nd year player too so playing this year wouldnt be throwing away a draft year basically like it would have Guidry (had he been healthy enough to throw late this season).
Will be interesting to keep up with this one because if Sheerin maybe starts to throw in a mid-week game in a couple weeks might be interesting to see what kind of impact he might have.

Guidry threw bullpens. Noot was set to return before the end of last year too. Javen Coleman also returned mid season after an injury the previous year and he didn't pitch any meaningful innings that year.
The fact that he threw a bullpen certainly makes it possible he returns but what exactly does that look like? Thats the grain of salt I'm referencing. Does that mean he makes a couple of 1 inning mid week appearances? Sure thats him returning this year but that doesn't really help us win in omaha.
The fact is that at this point, its still unlikely that he becomes a meaningful part of the bullpen by post season play. I hope I am wrong but I'm not betting the house on it.

We heard the same things about Shores last season

Noot did return and pitched in 2024. This situation is of no kin to another. Jay Johnson is letting the kid recover while still keeping the door open to a return, which by the simple fact that he has been throwing bullpens/live ABs for weeks now, looks like he will return barring a setback.

Shores had TJ which is completely different, and was going to pitch in the supers had we made it. Jay and Chase both confirmed that.
How some of you are so dense and rigid regarding injuries is baffling to me.

Those were also all upper body issues.

I can't imagine he would want to burn a year of eligibility to come back so late in the season.

This is true. My point wasn't that Sheerin is exactly like these other guys, its that you can't believe 100% of what Jay tells the media becuase he sayid the same thing about these other guys when they were set to return.

He's a 3 and done player regardless, either he pitches some this year, then pitches next year and becomes a decent draft pick or he pitches none this year, then pitches next year and still likely becomes a decent draft pick. He was hitting 98 as a freshman with a wipeout slider.
It's not a Guidry situation where this is his draft year or anything and he would lose all leverage by coming back for another year if he didnt redshirt.

It is different, but my point is that Jay being optimistic about a return isn’t exactly evidence that they will be returning to the lineup. (Love Jay Johnson btw, before someone accuses me of being a hater)

Think about it this way. Typical ACL recovery time is 8-9 months. There would be no point in ramping up his arm at this 8-9 month mark if you didn't have serious intentions of him pitching in 2025.

There's also potentially 2+ months left to this season, not like we're at the end in a few weeks, so plenty of time to see what happens over the next month with him.

Adding a RHP that sits 96 and will top out at 98-99 with a good slider will always be welcome on the staff, even if it is only for 1-2 months.

Amazing if we got him back by SEC Tourney
