A local Chicago group named The Houndz had some airplay in Chicago radio in 1979 with covers of The Rolling Stones' - Under My Thumb and Manfred Mann's - Doo Wa Diddy.
Both were awful.

It’s a shame that regional radio hits have gone the way of the dodo bird. frick Clear Channel for buying radio stations coast to coast and making them all sound the same. And frick Congress for changing the law in the 90s so they could do that and frick Clinton for signing it into law.

"Bong Bong (I Love You Madly)" - Vince Castro
Local doo-wop hit in the New York City area, 1958.
I'll never understand how it didn't break nationally. A perfect doo-wop song.

Supposedly was a popular prom slow dance around the Gulf South for several years
They were from Springhill LA

A classic example, even if calling it a regional "hit" might be stretching things.
This was essentially unknown outside NE coast doo wop fanatics, until Scorcese used it in Mean Streets in 1973

I may have hallucinated this, but IIRC I once saw a chart where this made top 10 at some CA station (Bakersfield? Fresno? Modesto?). It could only scrape to #99 nationally

This made #19 at one Detroit station in the spring of 1965
Somehow, that was enough to get the band on a national TV show (who paid for the trip?)
