Has anyone dealt with getting a lease this way, any horror stories will be greatly appreciated

I was supposed to go look at a parcel from there 2 or 3 years ago. Set up date and time with the landowner. The day before the showing, I touched base with him just to see where he wanted to meet. He gave me a simple "Oh, my family and I decided to sell the land, so we're not going to lease it". And that was that. Had already taken off work and loaded my bike up and everything 
Not sure what recourse I might've had, if any. So I just let it go.

Most opportunities fall through in my opinion....
I don't know if it is a scam, but doesn't seem to be very reliable...
