Is it a special type of mattress that goes on the adjustable frame beds or is just a regular mattress like a Serta work fine?

Ours is just a regular mattress. We did the split frame one where you can have two separate adjustments so it's basically two full size mattresses. I'm 6'1", 180lbs, and after two years my mattress had like sunk in A friend of ours told us Mattress Firm had the best mattress they had ever slept on so we bought from there. It was a very comfortable mattress for about a year and a half but I'm already needing a new one.Sorry but a mattress should not change/lose it's form after a year and a half. The adjustable frame is really nice though.

Any mattress will do. Many manufacturers sell split head kings that is just that. They have the head part of the mattress separated so one side could be up while the other is down. However both of your feet would have to be the same. If you want total freedom from the other side of the bed, you could buy 2 twin xl beds which is the exact size of a king.

We have a split King bed. I rotate the mattresses every month - foot to head and change mine with my wife's. We've had it for 3 or 4 years and they're good as new

The only mattresses that won't work on an adjustable base are traditional innersprings with an edge wire. It'll adjust once, and never again.
