The SEC will see a ton of turnover at quarterback ahead of the 2025 season. Oklahoma, Texas, Ole Miss, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Auburn, and Missouri will have new starting quarterbacks in 2025. It's a season of turnover and the SEC looks like a conference that will be wide open in the fall. The most anticipated new starter is Texas quarterback Arch Manning.
The hype around Manning has reached a fever pitch, which has fueled the Heisman and national championship expectations for the former five-star quarterback. If he can live up to the hype, he could very well find himself in New York at the end of 2025, and Texas will once again be in the College Football Playoff picture.
There are a lot of exciting quarterbacks to watch in the SEC next season, but how do the projected starters stack up ahead of spring ball? Here's our way-too-early rankings.
1. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU
Garrett Nussmeier was second in the SEC in passing yards in 2024 and is the most experienced passer in the SEC. If he makes a similar year-two jump like Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels, Nussmeier could earn the Tigers another Heisman trophy. What he did to Oklahoma in the regular season finale could be the start of an incredible 2025 season.
2. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
LaNorris Sellers' ascension in 2024 was a revelation for Gamecocks Football. His ability to win with his arm and his legs makes him one of the more exciting players to watch in the SEC.
3. D.J. Lagway, Florida
D.J. Lagway reinvigorated Florida's offense in 2024 and showed the promise of being a former five-star quarterback. While a lot of love will be given to Arch Manning, Lagway has the highest ceiling of any quarterback in the SEC.
4. John Mateer, Oklahoma
John Mateer is one of a number of dual-threat quarterbacks in the SEC. He's making a jump in competition but has the talent and demeanor to be a difference-maker for the Sooners. If the Sooners offensive line can return to respectable levels, Mateer and the Sooners offense should be in great hands in 2025.
5. Arch Manning, Texas
The hype has risen to epic performances before his first season as a starter commences. He's a talented player who's been in Steve Sarkisian's offense for three seasons. If Texas can overcome the losses they suffered on the offensive side of the ball, Manning could be in the mix for the Heisman at the end of the year. But at the moment, I have a hard time putting him higher than players with more experience.
6. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee
Although his performance in the College Football Playoff left a lot to be desired, Nico Iamaleava has the talent to put together a big-time season for the Tennessee Volunteers. The former five-star prospect has all the tools, he just needs to get more aggressive pushing the ball down field.
7. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt
Diego Pavia was one of the most exciting players in college football in 2024 and helped Vanderbilt reach bowl eligibility for the first time in a long time. He may not have gaudy numbers but he was perfect in the Commodores ball control offense.
8. Taylen Green, Arkansas
Taylen Green was another transfer last year that had a big season. Green was fifth in the SEC in passing yards and helped Arkansas beat Tennessee and Texas Tech last year. He returns to give the Razorbacks one of the more experience quarterbacks in the conference.
9. Jackson Arnold, Auburn
The talent is there but Jackson Arnold couldn't overcome the injury issues around him in 2024. He can run well and has a big arm, but he seemed unwilling to take risks in the passing game. Fumbles were an issue in his first year starting for the Sooners. He'll have a lot of talent around him with the Auburn Tigers.
10. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
Marcel Reed took over for Connor Weigman due to injuries and inconsistency. Reed flashed incredible athleticism and running ability but struggled with consistency throwing the football. Though he had a breakout performance against LSU, rushing for
11. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State
Blake Shapen has a lot of experience as he enters his second year with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Last year for the Bulldogs, Shapen threw for 974 yards and eight touchdowns in Mississippi State's 1-3 start. He's one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the conference, but the talent around him in Starkville may not be enough for that experience to matter.
12. Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Though Gunner Stockton started for the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff, he'll face some competition this offseason from Ryan Puglisi. Puglisi was a four-star quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class and considered the No. 10 quarterback in the cycle.
13. Austin Simmons, Ole Miss
Ole Miss is replacing one of their best quarterbacks of all time in Jaxson Dart, but people are really excited about Austin Simmons. He was a former four-star prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings.
14. Ty Simpson, Alabama
Ty Simpson will get the first shot to start out of the gate after serving as Jalen Milroe's backup for the last two seasons, but Keelon Russell and Austin Mack may make the quarterback decision a whole lot more difficult for Kalen DeBoer. Whoever is the starter at quarterback, you can bet they'll be productive in Alabama's offense.
15. Beau Pribula, Missouri
In two seasons with Penn State, Beau Pribula threw for 424 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 571 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's a dynamic player and will get his first chance to be a starter with the Missouri Tigers in 2025.
16. Zach Calzada, Kentucky
Zach Calzada spent time at Texas A&M and Auburn before going to Incarnate Word and having an incredibly productive season. Can he reignite his career on his third stop through the SEC?

Hard to argue with this opinion, but if they're correct, Bama is in for a rough season. Hate to see it

Apparently the author of this article does not read TRant. According to the experts here, Nussmeier is the worst QB in LSU history and should have been backing up Collins because of "running".

Nuss after the hit against Oklahoma that took him out briefly has been lights out. Hope it continues into next season.

The rankings seem pretty reasonable. I do think that Arch fumbles too often and that Simmons looked pretty solid in limited snaps at Ole Miss and could be good.

What am I missing with Lagway?

Watch him play! He's a stud and will get better when he gets more experience

So, Tyga, you placing a diamond-studded crown on Sir Arch before he gets some SEC bumps and bruises?

Are you trying to imply it's not likely?
