I have a brother who lives in Denmark so this is in part the reason it's an interesting story to me.

In short, I see how Greenland being apart of the US makes a lot more sense than being apart of Denmark. The US is capable of taking advantage of its strategic access to the artic immensely more than Denmark, for instance.

What's Greenland worth?

According to this article ( LINK) Greenland is worth somewhere between $12.5 billion and $77 billion.

How to get Denmark to sell?

Go directly to the Danish people.

The U.S. should start publicly suggesting that the Danish government should give every Greenlander and Danish citizen the proceeds from the sale of Greenland.

^ This should put pressure on the Danish government to sell Greenland as the citizens will quickly choose receiving the proceeds over any nationalistic reason to keep Greenland from an ally.

I did the math. The U.S. could buy Greenland for about $60.4 billion (recall previous estimate) and every Dane AND Greenlander would recieve $10,000.

This would be equivalent to just under $113 per acre for Greenland.

My brother in Denmark has a wife and two kids. They would recieve $40k in this scenario. I think most people in a home of four would choose $40k over keeping Greenland.

Thus, if the US really wants Greenland, (1) they should be willing pay what it's worth; (2) pressure the Danish government to give the proceeds to the people and be vocal about it.

Don't Greenlanders have the right to vote for separation either way?? Which would avoid having us from having to buy it from Denmark?

Supposedly, there may be a vote this spring. If they vote they want to be associated with the U.S,. the only thing we send Denmark is an eviction notice and the news that we are sending a divison of troops and numerous fighter jets.

Tell your brother, unfortunately for Denmark, that ship appears to have sailed. Mette Frederiksen, Denmark's PM, had her shot at a deal in 2019. She blew it.

Instead of simply hearing Trump's offer, she was not just dismissive, but openly derisive of any talk of US acquiring Greenland. She basically rejected the offer, and Trump with it, as too stupid to even be bothered with ( LINK). Trump called her "nasty," and canceled a planned trip there.

Fast forward 6yrs, and my how that worm has turned for your brother's country. The Danes kept Greenland under their economic thumb for centuries, and only granted self-rule in 2009. So there was already a degree of Greenlander dissatisfaction.

Then, three yrs into Frederiksen's current term, evidence of Tuskegee-style forced contraception campaigns in Greenland by Danish authorities during the 1960s and 1970s came to light. Full investigations began in 2023, with expected conclusion this coming May. As a result, the Greenlandic government, particularly the Siumut party, expressed intentions to hold a vote on independence from Denmark.

As it stands now, Greenland is scheduled to hold general elections in March. Independence from Denmark is expected to be a central issue. Pending the results, a potential independence referendum could occur as early as April. Subsequent legal/administrative processes could take another 18-24 mos. After that time, Denmark would be excluded from the negotiation/compensation loop altogether.

Under those circumstances, I'd expect Frederiksen to justifiably go down in Danish history as the empty-headed PM with a $100 billion smartass mouth.

Greenland is not Denmark's to sell. They won't see one red cent.

The government of Greenland will get royalty checks on minerals we extract and that will be all it takes for them to chuck duces at Denmark's lame asses.
