How much better was LSU football’s defense in 2024 than 2023

In my estimation they were like 50 spots better in rankings that matter right?

For some reason I’m thinking they moved from 115sh to 68ish area like mid 60s

In yards allowed per play, they went from 109 to 88. So no, not all rankings that matter were they 50 spots better.

Do you know how far they jumped in ppg allowed?

Defensive rankings can be misleading compared to offense, but imo, we were light years better as a whole this year
Unfortunately, our most glaring weakness (mobil QB on runs/scrambles) absolutely devastated us in the three game losing streak. It came at the worst time and the most frustrating thing about it, it came out of nowhere, was eventually fixed, and was really only an issue in that stretch and to a lesser extent, the SC game before Sellers went down.
And whats even more shocking, the one team that SHOULD have exploited that the most was Dart and Ole Miss. And we held him to ~25 yds.

Thanks man. That’s significant improvement in year one. 2023 probably would have one a championship with that defense.

Not much better. See Bama home loss. Milroe put on a clinic.

Yes, and the point that I was trying make was that the ppg was aided by the fact that the offense was much more methodical and possessed the ball for over 32 minutes a game, thus giving the opponent less opportunities to possess the ball and score. The 2023 offense was #1 in the country and so unbelievably dynamic and yet only possessed the ball for 28 minutes a game. If you compare the points allowed by defense compared to the time that the opponents had possession of the football, the points allowed per opponent's time of possession from both seasons is very similar. Point being, had the '24 offense been as explosive as '23 and only possessed the ball for 28 minutes a game, the '24 defense would have allowed around 27.5 ppg based off of points allowed per minute of opponent's possession.

I actually think our D improved even more than the numbers really show, to make that case I look at each position group.
At every spot we saw substantial improvement in overall production (and even flashes of high level play) EXCEPT safety. Both of those spots were pretty awful for the whole season.
The problem is when you have bad safety play 15 yard plays turn into 40+ yard plays and/or long TDs. When you factor in all those big plays we gave up it really dilutes our improvements (statistically).
By no means is this unit where it needs to be but w the new talent, experience returning, key transfers at certain spots, development/growth of younger guys, upgraded coaching staff at every level, I’m super bullish on this D going into year 2 w Baker.
I expect another substantial defensive improvement by year’s end. I think top 25 is the floor, could be elite.
