I have a 2000 Honda Foreman 450 S and had to jump it because the battery was dead. Started right up and ran fine. Turned it off later to see if the battery would hold a charge, wouldn’t start, jumped it again and it started but when it started, something in the battery compartment “popped”.

I put a new battery in it but the neutral light or the reverse light won’t light up and it won’t start. Fuses are all good, I changed the solenoid, and the 30 amp in line fuse but still nothing. What else could it be??

Make sure you didn’t miss a fuse somewhere on the harness, there can be several.

Check your grounds everywhere. Make sure battery connections are solid.

After that it’s time to check the cdi and regulator.

I’m not sure what cdi and regulator are, I’m not the greatest mechanic. I can do the basics but that’s about it. May be time to take it to a mechanic

They’re the control boxes, basically the computer for the engine. They’re fairly easy to swap but that would be throwing parts at it.

Have you checked to make sure the bulbs aren't blown?

Regulator maybe. It’s the plate with fins looking thing on the back end of it. Happened to my 2001 450 ES. It kept jacking up batteries that were new.

I'm thinking regulator - especially with the popped bulbs.
Should be easy to change.

I have exact same bike- year and all. My regulator went bad. Very easy to replace. It’s under the right rear fenderwell. If you have a meter, you can test it and see.

Good chance it’s the rectifier. Lights out are probably because of your 15amp fuse in the fuse box blown because of a faulty rectifier. I’ll post the part number below but test it first to be sure. Good luck.

I haven’t checked the bulbs, but even if they were blown it should still start shouldn’t it? It won’t make a sound when you hit the starter

Ok, I’ll try the rectifier next.

Does it start with the pull rope?

I haven’t tried the pull rope. It’s in my garage in a tight spot and I haven’t pushed it outside

Had a 99 foreman that the starter went out on and the battery hold a charge and messed with the lights. Changed the starter and all that went away.

Rectifier is the name for it, common issue. RR frame mounted. They interchange between many, borrow a buddies. Easy to swap, two 10mm bolts and a harness. If it won't start with pull rope, then definitely try it.

How many volts do you have at the battery?

12. Brand new battery and I tested it with a meter, as well as the fuses. They all seem to be fine

I would hold off on replacing the rectifier. That part has to do with the charging system not the ignition system/starting system.

12 volts is technically low for the battery. 12.3 is were it needs to be.

Assuming you checked continuity on the fuses and to see if you have power on both sides of the fuse(main fuse and ignition fuse)?

There is a few items that could be causing the issue.

Are you in the Baton Rouge area?
