Does Tyler Perry Run BET or Something?

Forrest Gump was on VH1 last night and every commercial break there were ads for different BET show's called "Tyler Perry's" something or other. Does this dude run that network or something?
Also who the hell is watching these things? Is it just middle aged black ladies? I'd never heard of any of those titles until last night in between Forrest and Jenny being on the rocks, then peas and carrots again
