Splurged and got myself a 1961 American reissue in Fiesta Red. It’s a 2024 I got for a nice deal on a floor model that wasn’t moving.

I’ve had it a couple months now. The sound is a bit dull and muddy to my ear? I’ve been online. Tweaked the pickup height. Dull sound.

Of note. I am comparing this to my other guitar. This guitar I put in a Custom Shop Fat 60’s.

Talk me out of changing the PUPs on a brand new guitar.

Did it sound muddy when you tried it out at the store?
What kind of strings do you have on it now?

Who jammed a P-Bass pickup in there?

Keep tweaking pup height one at time, you’ll find it.

I am pretty sure the 60s era pickups have more midrange added than the 50s style. I would keep tweaking the height and cut the mids on my amp. If you can’t get the tone you like I would look at Lollar Blondes, which is their 50s vintage pickup that has a mid range scoop in it.

No. But bigger room at GC and better amp. I did try my amp there as well. They had mine but not my Peavey 30.

Put DR strings on it. Which are on my other one.
