Looking at a trip to either NYC or Boston and then Coastal Maine for July of this year. Family of 4 (kids are 11 and 14). Thinking we would fly from NOLA to either NYC or Boston. Stay in the city for 2-3 days then rent a car and drive to Maine. Have been to NYC a few times and always enjoyed, but not been to Boston. Once in Maine, would like rent a VRBO either close to or on the water. Would appreciate any recommendations for pros/cons of NYC vs Boston on front end and then best areas in Maine to stay/things to do. Like to hike, swim, shop, maybe fishing or otherwise get on the water.
Have never been to Maine. Thanks!

Several years ago we went to Acadia NP. We took a day trip out to Cranberry Island and Islesford Island. You catch the mail boat at Southshore Harbor.
It is well worth the time. Both islands have restaurants and Islesford is an art enclave in the summer.

Camden is a great base. Driving can be slower than it looks on the map. Beautiful state.

we did this trip last summer. NYC, drove through NE, stopped in Mystic Connecticut for a night, then on to Kennebunkport, then drove to Boston to fly back to MSY. Regrettably, we didn't have enough time for Acadia. There's some great towns and areas to see in NE that we didn't have time for but it was a great trip. We stopped in multiple towns in between those stops.
Kennebunkport has some nice Airbnb homes near the water if you choose it as a stop. The whale tour and lobster tour were highlights.
