This is my take on the playoff and why we wont never see one. First and this is my opinion so lets not get to hostile. Notre dame is an independent wil not join a league. And why should they.Would you wont to get up the CBS money and share with anyone. No they only have to win what 9 games to be able to qualify for BCS consideration. the only way to be able to have a true playoff is for the conference champs and maybe the runner up to play each other. And finally there are over 800 millon catholics in the world so i dont think the are going to go against the university. And who knows how many university presidents are of the catholic faith.

Has more to do with the Rose Bowl than Notre Dame.

Matching up conference champs (and even runner ups) wouldn't work very well. Imagine a scenario where Cincinnati gets a top seed and Texas doesn't even get in (which is what would have happended this year).

I know this isn't the consensus opinion out there, but I don't want a playoff system. I agree that what happened this year with the big 12 south and with auburn a few years ago sucks, but I love college football for the simple reason that every single game matters. If we switch to a playoff system there will still be complaining about the 9th ranked team in an 8 team playoff, there will always be conflict. In the NFL you have games that are meaningless b/c they are out of division, or a playoff spot has already been clinched. I love the fact that because USC lost early in the year to an inferior opponent leaves them out of the BCS game. If you want to be in the big dance, win your games!! I know a lot of fans might not agree with me, but IMHO it's what makes college football better than the NFL.

I would agree with this statement.
I am in favor of a playoff system. Think of the great match ups you could have possibly had this year. I think an 8 team playoff system would be perfect. You could still play all the bowl games, just reserve 6 bowls for the bracket, with one national championship games. The 8 spots could be based on the BCS scoring system. Just my 2cents

Why do people continue to use the excuse that "the regular season wouldn't matter if we had playoffs"? Do they realize that you still have to win in order to win their conference? So any game that you lose drastically reduces the chances of making the championship game or winning the conference if they don't have a championship game. This excuse along with "the players would miss too many classes" are beyond ridiculous regarding the playoff argument.

I think that's doubtful, but even if we did, it's MUCH better than excluding a really good (and potentially undefeated) #3 team. IMHO, if you're not in the top 4 or 5 after conference title week, you're probably not good enough to play for the NC, which is why we should have a plus one.
The regular season loses nothing if we go with a plus one format. We still have 12 games, conference titles and the regular bowls. Each year we would just rotate the 1v4 and 2v3 matchups during bowl season between the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and Rose. The winner plays for the NC on a neutral playing field. Done.
I would rather have an 8 game playoff, but this is definitely an improvement over the "system" (using the term lightly) we have today.

The arguement that the regular season would suffer if there was a playoff is incorrect, and I think many times it is used as misinformation by the bowl proponents. The regular season would benefit from a playoff because teams such as LSU could schedule some interesting and difficult non-conference match ups without having to worry about being eliminated from national championship contention with one or two losses. Schools could schedule with a focus on improving for the post season playoff rather than having to schedule cupcakes to put up easy wins.

This I agree with.

All bullshite aside, a +1 would be terrible for college football. What would it have done this year? Failed, just like the BCS. Anyone who watched any of the Rose Bowl should see a +1 would not be a good idea. Too much influece from media dumbasses and others with an agenda. Did you hear Pussburger & frickstriet during the Rose Bowl pimping USC to play the winner of the BCS championship? Why USC? frick that shite. I'm telling you, a +1 isn't a good idea.

The thing about discussing a playoff for Div 1A that really gets to me is it seems that not one of the persons talking about it has looked at the FCS system that has been in place for some good many years and it works.
They have a recognized NCAA champion each year and the Football Bowl Series which it is now called ( Div 1A) has a poll, the BCS poll.
Why is it that everyone thinks there is a need to re-invent the playoffs when in fact there is a proven system already being implemented in the FCS (better known as in the old days Div 1AA).
There are 120 some schools in that division, with 16 conferences, and they have a Champion.
If they want there damn bowl game money install them in the playoff games. As it is now there is only one bowl that is the championship game and the only thing lacking is recognition by the institute that governs the sport. It is still the only sport in the US that has no champion.
rant on.

This year, USC wouldn't have been in it. I believe that according to the BCS standings it would have been UO vs Bama & UF vs TX. Winners play for the NC...not bad in my opinion and certainly an improvement over what we have.
On another note, you can't judge the system based on the results it would produce in one year. This year, I think as far as the NC game it got it right but you and I still know the current structure is crap because we have 10 years of performance to look at. A plus one will get it right the majority of the time.
I would LOVE to see something like the FCS model, but the greedy arse bowl commissioners won't have that. The only way to do something sane and keep the bowls in tact is a plus one.

In fact, to me, Richmond is more of a national champion than the winner of tonight's game....

This is so damn stupid. Why do people think this is the case? I'm Catholic and Notre Dame can suck it. I hope they go 0 - 12 every year. The only Notre Dame fans I know are bandwagoners that I only here from when they are doing well.
