Why the 2008 meltdown matters for 2009

The final 2008 ranking will have a lot to do with the start point of the 2009 season.
I suppose we will end up 2008 in the 22 range, but maybe as low as 25-27.
Even after the meltdown.........
....Since we have 2 NC's in the last 5 years and the LSU/SEC brand, combined with the biggest beatdown in the bowl season (thus far), a somewhat experienced and apparently capable QB in JJ, a capable/new set of defensive coaches, and likely a #1 recruiting class with 2-5 instant impact players............I guess the pollsters will start us in the 10-20 range to begin the 2009 season. the question is how close to 10 or 20 will we be.
If we start next season ranked lower than the 13-15, a 1-loss of zero-loss season may not do the trick since the SEC (overall), and our out-of-conference schedule, may not provide the S.O.S. needed to get us in the big dance. Remember when Auburn went undefeated?
Time will tell......

with LSU's "brand name" I dont think a start at #20 and having 1 loss would prevent us from playing in the NC game unless there are 2 undefeated BCS teams. Especially with the schedule

I am not so sure. Media opinion, for what that is worth, seems to be that now LSU has found its quarterback and with the defensive hires and great recruiting class the ship will be righted for 2009. I think we will fare much better in the 2009 pre season rankings then we end up in 2008.

So you think that we are ranked near the top 10 to start the season after a 8-5 2008?

You will see lsu at or around 13-14.... the beatdown of GT was unexpected, chavis is well respected and the #1 recruiting class we assure we are in the top half of the teens but the 8-5 keeps us out of the top 10.
People say UA runs away with thw SECw but i think otherwise, unless Star Jackson is the next wwelll.... Jordan Jefferson

No. But I agree with the earlier poster. The CW is that LSU will be back in 2009. My guess is we'll be ranked about 15-20 in part as a punishment for 2008. But if we start hot and beat the Gators, we'll climb the rankings very quickly.
Put it this way. Say Georgia Tech is ranked 18th, Tulsa is ranked 19th and LSU 20th. If all three teams start 5-0, LSU will be top 5, Georgia Tech top 10 and Tulsa low teens.

Certainly an undefeated SEC champion is a presumptive participant in the NC game. Where we start isn't all that key if we make it to Atlanta and win.

I think the assumption in the hypothetical is that we lose one game. Any undefeated SEC team is going to Pasedena.

Probably true but not necessarily. If USC, Texas, OU and Ohio State all have one loss, I could see a 1 loss SEC champ finishing 3rd if they started sufficiently behind the others in the polls.
I feel fairly confident that we can only lose one game to have any hope. And I feel pretty good that our rep is such that if we win, we'll move up fairly quickly. But I expect sportswriters to rank us in the back half of the top 25 at the start because of our abysmal 2008.

I think that our ranking can only improve as the teams in the SEC win. Georgia will be ranked much lower next year because of the departure of Moreno and Stafford.
Tebow is staying, so if they win tomorrow night, expect Florida to be #1 when next year starts.
My point is...Beating UF benefits us greatly, but beating UG, when we will likely be ranked higher than UG, is not helpful.
We have to be below 15 when the season starts to, possibly, make it to the NCG with 1 loss.

concur. I think 13 or 14 is the magical number. Going thru the UF game undefeated should get us into the top 5 from that starting point, or as high as 4. With no losses thereafter, attrition should get us in the big show if we hold up. If we loose a game, say to Ole Miss or BAMA thereafter, we prolly will need a lot of help with a single loss at such a point in the season.

AU debacle is history. We need to win the SEC, and Miles knows it. Without that, we won't be relevant to anybody but ourselves (see 2008). Next year is gonna be a blood bath in the SEC...I just hope we remember this year's beatdowns to motivate.

Didn't Alabama start the season unranked? Wasn't PEnn State around 22 to start the year?
Both were in control of their own destiny for the BCS CG before Halloween.

You are truly a rocket scientist.

They moved up quick after beating Georgia and alot of people lost ahead of them.

Bama started in the AP poll at 24 but were #2 by week 5. If we come out and play well, our preseason ranking won't matter.

They did beat Clemson before this poll came out which moved them up quick too.
