It’s the intangibles that Kelly struggles with

Beyond coaching the technical stuff, i.e. blocking, tackling, running, kicking, throwing techniques, mechanics, schemes, play calls, etc, there is another very important aspect to coaching and leading and that is mental.
BK seems to not connect to his team to get them ready, mentally/emotionlly and that’s what he’s lacking in my opinion. He may do and say all the right things technically but as far as getting players mindsets correct, getting them properly motivated I think that’s his weakness. Sure he didn’t directly cause his team to make all the mistakes they made but he doesn’t seem to know how to coach them up from a psychological perspective to help them prepare and perform at their maximum.
He hasn’t/cant seem to master the intangibles. That differentiates the good coaches from the great coaches. At this point it appears that BK is merely good, not great. And his salary would equate to one who is great.

And who is a great coach these days? The parity in the sport with NIL is impossible to gauge. Your teams are diff year to year. Not saying Kelly is perfect. Or that last night was acceptable. But goodness … who ya gonna get?

So...you're saying he's not a culture fit?

quote:I don’t think it has anything to do with culture - it’s more to do with understanding psychology and temperament and personality. Admittedly most coaches don’t have the right abilities in this area. I’m not saying we need to get rid of BK. I’m just saying he may not have all the abilities/ skills/talent to be one of the few elites. We have that expectation due to the high salary but maybe we just lower/adjust our expectations.

Coach cig of Indiana is a much better coach than BK
