Going to Dallas for the weekend in December. Will be running a race downtown with a group of friends.
Looking to stay either by Union station or near Ervay and Commerce. What spot would be better?
Also any good restaurants to eat and hangout on Saturday night? Nothing too fancy.

Dakotas Steakhouse
Good food with a story. The property was owned by a Baptist church who had a clause in their selling agreement that no buyer could sell alcohol. The buyers found a loophole that allowed them to build underground and bypass the alcohol restriction. The restaurant is under ground, the entrance is an elevator.

Downtown has a few big chain places(Marriot,Omni, Sheraton) plus Adolphus & Statler that are good. Uptown directly NW of Downtown has better places with more to do/restaurants/bars. Ritz Carlton/The Crescent/Hotel ZaZa. The W Hotel is in Victory Park next to the AAC down the hill from Uptown.

Ever been to the Crafty Irishman?
We were trying to stay where we can walk to the convention center and start of the race in front of City hall.

Commerce/Ervay will have more bars and restaurants close by. The area around union station is kind of desolate and not the best area to be walking at night. Either location is easy enough to walk/jog a warmup to the convention center. Never been to Craft Irishman but City Tavern is close to that and where I would go for a beer. Downtown in general is not a hot spot for hanging out. I would send you to Bishop Arts area which is about a 5 minute Uber or Lowest Greenville area which is about 5-7 minute ride as well.

I stayed here in May
It's right across the street from AT&T Discovery District. Several places to hang out there. I stayed at Hyatt near Union Station a few years ago. I had to Uber more to get to restaurants.
I went to The Woolworth to eat a meal. Woolworth
I went to Happiest Hour for drinks Happiest Hour

Take the tram at Union Station down to Bishop Arts. Cool stores and great restaurants.
Or head over to Deep Ellum. Same thing: good food and unique shopping.
Carriage ride to see Christmas lights in Highland Park.
