The company previously announced it had plans to close 300 underperforming locations, CNN reported. The new number includes those stores.

In all, Walgreens plans to close 500 locations over this fiscal year, The Associated Press reported.

“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” CEO Tim Wentworth said in a statement to Reuters.

The drug store chain has had financial trouble over the past few years with reimbursements for prescriptions lower than previously while the cost to operate stores continues to climb.

The company also is reviewing its healthcare business called VillageMD and may consider selling part or all of the clinics, less than two years after the company planned to sink billions of dollars to expand the offering, the AP reported.

Walgreens has about 8,500 stores in the U.S., Forbes reported.

Are they closing stores in areas where shoplifting is legal? Let's hope they close every store in California.

I used Walgreens for years and transferred my stuff to a local mom and pop a couple of years ago. They had gotten so slow and customer unfriendly that I had had enough. Blame only themselves for their horrible customer service.

Stunning the cycle's some of these retailers go through.

10 years ago, there were two Rite-Aids (one across from the other), a Walgreens and a CVS (4 total) all within 200 yards of each other here in Vestavia.

Now there is a single druggist (the Walgreens) who is feeling the strain of (a newer) CVS having closed months ago.

I don't understand corporate planning, never have.

Same here but with CVS. Some mom and pops will still “doctor” a little bit too, and save you some time and money associated with doctor visits. I won’t ever go back to a chain.

Will VVS close the 1,200 stores they have on the opposite corners of those?

Which one leads and which one follows in the site selection?

That's one of my backup Walgreens. I use the one in Cahaba Heights and have always been pleased with them as I was with the Rite Aid which was across the street. Do not care for the CVS behind The Summit nor any others in the area.

I used to use CVS. The persistent robocalls drove me to switch all of my prescriptions to an independent pharmacy. I really like going to a place where my family and I are known and treated like close friends. There are much shorter wait times and no long lines. I would never go back to a chain pharmacy.
