my dad. complaining of intense shoulder pain this am while trying to deadhang which is part of our warmup to barbell back squat. Though he was able to do band pull-aparts with no uncommon discomfort
a close friend is an ortho, another is a chiro; but before i ask them for a recommendation id appreciate the boards opinion on where to begin assessing this issue
1. retired farmer, 5'7" ~170 lbs
2. quad bypass in 2016. good cardio reports since then
3. physically "beat up" from a farming career
4. has always complained of poor elbow and shoulder health throughout my life
5. i lift weights/exercise with him appx 1x/wk for past 5 years
6. i think it occurred while he was performing a roof repair a month ago, but not certain. this is the first time we have tried back squats since that work
please advise with any other questions. thanks to all

The shoulder is a complicated joint and no one here is going to be able to give you good advice on that even if they’re an ortho, you need to bring him somewhere so they can see and manipulate the shoulder.
Why are you doing dead hangs with a 75 year old as a warm up to doing barbell squats?

Stop doing this in your warm-up.

I see you're in Lafayette. My father in law goes to LOS and has great things to say.
Based on no exam whatsoever, and common things being common, I'd say he probably has some degree of impingement. And no injury rules out some other serious things like RTC tear or labral tear.
I would start with some basic range of motion exercises. Sleeper stretches are some of my favorite rehab exercises also.
