Four Seasons or Hotel Teatro
It's a half-mile from the arena and right across the street from the performing arts center (if you want to do something the other night).

Last year we stayed Downtown at what is now Limelight Hotel , took the A train from the airport to union station and walked to the hotel.
Looking at the map its 3-1/2 blocks to Ball Arena, Downtown is actually nice and we did not have any trouble, breakfast at Snooze was nice and affordable, we sat outside then spent some time at the Farmers Market.

It's been many years since I last stayed in Denver, but back when I used to have business downtown I'd always stay at the Brown Palace. It may have turned into a dump by now, but back then it was fabulous.

I typically stay at The Thompson/Denver (Hyatt Boutique Hotel) on 16th street. You can take the train from DIA to Union Station and the hotel is 4 or so blocks uptown from the station. Ball arena is within walking distance as well as the Rockies stadium.

I second the Limelight hotel. The restaurants downstairs are great, try Tavernetta (italian) and/or Sunday Vinyl (american). And several other good ones within a couple of blocks:
Jinya (ramen)
Mercantine Dining and Provisions (american)
Snooze (breakfast/brunch)
ChoLon (asian)
The bar in Union Station has a nice vibe to it due to its location.

Crawford Hotel in Union Station
Oxford Hotel
if you want to go somewhere cool and different than the usual names everyone knows.
Jack White filmed the Lazaretto music video in The Cruise Room, downstairs art deco craft cocktail bar at the Oxford Hotel.
