Two things: First, one person does not make a team. There was little and no team chemistry. What winning they did do, they did in spite of themselves. There was plenty of talent there, but there was also the primadonna effect.
Second, Dale Brown was good at coaching underdogs, but seemed to have difficulty coaching talent and molding it into a team.
There was a lot of rumbling back at that time about Shaq's step-father being somewhat of an interference with Brown, but I can't back that up so it has to remain rumor.

I forgot how well he could move back then! Incredibly athletic. Imagine if he had bothered to stay in shape all of these years in the NBA.

Dale Brown was a great recruiter and great with the media but his coaching went downhill later in his career.

he said he was until he looked down the court and saw Dale (something to that effect, don't remember the exact quote).
Then he said he knew they were OK.

Dale pretty much quit his last three years after he lost Livingston and let the program deteriorate from top to bottom and in every way even before probation (which didn't take affect until Brady's second year).
I never really liked the guy for many reasons (some best left unsaid), but his teams gave me memories that I'll always cherish, so for that I've forgiven.

Shaq was usually not fouled, he was assaulted, remember the Arkansas game? The SEC should have stepped in, but they didn't.
And all the negatives you read above about Dale are mostly true.

My fondest memories were listening to LSU basketball games on radio and watching Dale's coaches show on sunday nights - great times.

He was also molested by Tennessee in the conference tournament. It was ridiculous.

They were fun to watch. I think we scored over 100 pts in one game and lost. One thing I remember though is no one but CJ could hit a free throw to save their life.

Not to mention the Loyola Marymount game. 107-105. I have never seen a college game like that. Thats a lot of scoring for only 40 minutes.

yeah i remember that GT team, there was one other guard - weren't they the 3 amigos or something - and a pretty good guy at forward - Cremins had a good team and run during that time.
Brian Oliver was the other guard...mainly played European ball after a brief stint with the Hawks...one year maybe.
It was the Lethal Weapon 3...the Three Amigos would represent our current basketball team!

quote:He only played one season with Jackson, and Shaq was not even a shadow of his future self offensively as a true freshman. His defense was simply unpolished, but his offense was clumsy at best.
What was even more amazing was he played with star point guard Chris Jackson
Had Jackson stayed one more year and played with the Sophomore Shaq, I don't think even Dale Brown could have screwed that one up.

We beat UNLV 107-105 on Blanton's last second trey bomb from the corner. A week later the Loyola game ended up 148-141 we win in OT. THAT'S a lot of points for a college hoops game.

John Salley had Mark Price with him.
The role players with them were Bruce Dalrymple and Yvon Joseph (the Haitian Sensation...got him off the Haitian Olympic volleyball team).

Cremins could recruit

I still remember how amazed I was with this game. I didn't even know who LSU was at the time (being a Yankee and Syracuse fan) but I was a college bball fan and saw this game. Couldn't believe that the whole game pretty much consisted of running down the floor and shooting on both sides. Also remember Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble on LMU. I have a copy of the game somewhere on VHS that was replayed several years ago when they ran a series of LSU related games and "Everybody's All American"

We had Shaq, Stanley Roberts and Chris Jackson all on the same team one year and we still couldn't.
