Georgia Henry County Oak Ridge
Barnett Xbox

About to get down at 9:00 and head in to watch game day. Decided to stay out just a few more minutes. Glad I did, big nanny strolled in. We lost blood headed into thick pines. Son and I started to get concerned… looked left she was dead as a hammer. No blood, when quartering she was full, all stayed in her chest cavity. Crazy. Thankful for the good food. Hope you baws are enjoying the by weekend.

We have some good bucks in the area looking forward to the upcoming rut.

Hell yeah! I decided to chase squirrels this morning but only got 3. Not much shooting being opening day, guess they weren’t feeding this morning?

They have been extremely nocturnal here. I usually get a good buck patterned early first weekend. They have given me the slip for the first couple of weeks. Hoping they get back on track soon. Great to get a doe down early, great day. Hope you have a great weekend Koolazzkat!

You could have killed a couple hundred of those little rascals this morning! Everywhere!

St. Tammany
Hot

I’m sitting out here sweating my arse off. Had some does coming in pretty consistently since opening day. Hopefully one slips up this pm and gives me a good angle. Don’t want to take any marginal shots today. Too hot.

First morning in the 60’s. Here’s to you getting some dinner. Hoping weather starts cooperating for us all. Early season is always tough. It will pay off.

Seeing bucks just last light on the wrong wind. Had a 2 year old 8 had to pass last light last week. It’s going to get started here in the next couple of weeks. Probably sooner.

Just had two really nice does cruise through. On a weird trail and out of range. Hoping they circle back to munch acorns under this huge oak I’m set up on.

They came back. Just smoked one at 25 yards. Shot and arrow both look good. Coming back in an hour.

Hopefully an easy track and you haven't updated because you are busy cleaning!

I can legally hunt to 720 pm and at 7:15 I black bear came out and was eating berries of the sumac bushes… 30 yards from me I was like that’s why I haven’t seen any deer.. a couple of bears ain’t gonna cut it.. I’ve never seen a bear there.. just saying

Edit that was an Errie climb down in the dark my headlight wouldn’t reach it and I can’t hear for shite! I immediately strapped my side arm as soon as I hit the ground.. lol

Bad news. Tracked for about 150 yards and lost the trail in some waist high Christmas berries. Gonna go back in the AM first thing and pick back up where I left off. Confusing. Shot seemed good, arrow had good blood, and the trail was good the whole way. Frustrating. Haven’t lost a track in years. Also nervous about letting a deer lay overnight with it being so warm.

Got her this am. She ran 200 yards and crossed the river. I hit her a little more back than I thought. Got her cleaned up, meat seems to be fine. She died on the river bank under a bunch of shade. I think it helped keep her cool.

That’s awesome brother. It sucks when you lose blood and don’t have easy access to a tracking dog. Kudos to you for not giving up and continuing in the am. It’s warm, as long as the meat hasn’t changed color you should be ok. The processor will let you know if you don’t quarter your self.

For sure. Based on the track she took, there’s no way we’d have found her last night without a lacy or something. She got into waist high Christmas berries and was bleeding sporadically underneath them. Only reason we found her today is a lab with a good nose and flagging tape to try to establish a path. Multiple times we lost blood for 20-30 yards and at the end we just got lucky and picked it up on her home stretch. To be fair to me, the shot wasn’t awful. A little far back, but the first 50 yards she was bleeding great. I feel like some does just get the will to live and run forever.

Regardless, super happy we found her and grateful to put some food in the freezer early. I didn’t keep the ribs or the tenderloins, but everything else seems totally fine. Backstraps were beautiful.

Climbed into my lock-on late. Very hot and gnats were bothering me. Nothing moving today!

Just an FYI, I live in Washington Parish and often track in St. Tammany Parish. My Lacy's would have found that deer in about 5 minutes.

We should link up. Love watching a good blood dog work, though I try to avoid it for my property unless I really have to. My group of buddies are always looking for a good blood dog though. I’m originally from Bogalusa.
