Europe in August/September

My daughter and I want to take a trip but the best time for her work wise is August. I’ve read here that Italy mostly is “closed” for August.
If we can’t make September work for her, where would your choice be if it has to be August?
We’ve never been to Europe if that factors into your thoughts/recs.

August is really the best month to visit the Azores, and that's my favorite place in Europe out of all the 21 countries I've visited.
Otherwise, I highly suggest visiting northern Europe during that time. Think Iceland, Scotland, Norway, the Faroe Islands. August may be peak tourist season for them, but the very long days mean that you still have opportunities to see all the natural sights without them being overly crowded.

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and Scotland are not as crowded as the Mediterranean areas. Natural sights and historic places are plentiful. The service industry in these regions is not affected by the European vacationing, so I have not worried about that.

Just understand that the weather up north is very hit or miss anytime. You don’t want to go to that fabulous 3000’ overlook like I did and see this.

Yeah Iceland is a great choice for mid August.
Weathers great and a nice reprieve from the oppressive heat in the south
It’s safe as possible too. Would be a great girls trip .

Southern Europe is a combo of closed and/or very busy peak tourist season, temps can also be quite sweltering.
What are you looking for out of this trip Europe is a large diverse place.
The Alpine region can be pretty nice that time of year.
Munich > Garmisch-Partenkirchen > Innsbruck > Salzburg/Bertchesgaden > Vienna
Could be a good shout depending on how much time you have

I would try to work in a day in London if you go in August. Buckingham Palace is open for tours while the King is on holiday.
