One of the more fascinating stories of the 2025 recruiting cycle has emerged in this first week of September. The college football and recruiting world is becoming quickly familiar with a prospect by the name of Tobi Haastrup out of Houston (Tex.) Mayde Creek. This time last week, Haastrup, 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, had never suited up for a high school varsity football game. Now, as of Thursday morning, he has 11 division one offers. There is a remarkable backstory to the newest Texas high school football star.

Haastrup has an international background, growing up in London for nearly the first decade of his life. He would then move to America, first to California, then Texas. Along the way, he focused on his track career, of which he has had success, especially for his size. At 240 pounds, Haastrup has recorded a 10.7-second 100 meter dash as well as real success in shot put. Spending his high school career solely as a track and field athlete, Haastrup was convinced this summer by coaches at Mayde Creek to play football. Unsure about his future, he decided to trust the guidance of his coaches, so Haastrup put his mind to it. And his body. He first started to learn the ropes this summer and put on pads for the first time in a competitive setting this fall. Even he could not have predicted what came next. Last week, during his first football game at the high school level, the senior exploded for a five sack performance. The following day, he posted the highlights of his performance, which was then followed by a rapid ascent in various scouting and personnel departments across the country.

UTEP and UTSA were the first pair of programs to offer but were quickly joined by Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Texas State, SMU, Virginia, Illinois, Boise State, and LSU, all of which came in over a 24-hour period. Georgia Tech is the latest to extend an offer as Thursday morning, bringing his total to 11 offers. The now very popular Haastrup spoke with Rivals to detail this dramatic rise that has effectively changed the direction of his life and athletic career. "It all started when I finally made the tough decision on whether or not I was going to play football this season or not. I wanted to go into my senior year and really focus in on track and I knew that football would be in the way of that. So, it wasn’t until a lot of convincing from Mayde Creek’s former head coach, Coach Jensen, as well as my track coaches, Wilson and Lewis, who got me to play. I came out every morning of camp in the summer even though I had track practice everyday of the summer as well as running for my other team called Track Houston."

The Mayde Creek staff made it a project this summer to get Haastrup up to speed as quickly as possible. "Everything was new to me, I was pretty much clueless and the whole summer was really just 'see ball get ball'". When school started up and we got in pads I began to pick up on more as my defensive line coach, Coach Wilson, really went the extra mile in working with the basic fundamentals of being an edge rusher and a defensive tackle."

"Fast forward to my first game and I left everything in God’s control and hands and just played how I was taught. All Glory to God I finished the game with five sacks and i believe seven tackles for loss." He now has 11 scholarships available to him with surely plenty more to come. I asked Haastrup if he has been a college football fan or been in tune with the sport in his time in America. "Not really at all. I don’t think i’ve ever sat to watch a full collegiate football game ever. It’s all so new but I have definitely enjoyed watching collegiate highlights of edge rushers and outside linebackers."

Haastrup is now building relationships with college coaches across the country, trying to learn as much as he can as quickly as he can. With most classes in the 2025 cycle becoming full and just three months before the early signing period, it will be an abbreviated recruitment. Haastrup says he has some work on his end to learn everything about these colleges he can."I have made th at as my personal homework to do so."

Rivals has become the first recruiting network to rank Haastrup, slotting him a four-star prospect and a 5.9 rating. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound speedster will now move to the rest of his debut season with the eyes of every college program in the country keenly watching. With five sacks in his first game, it will be intriguing to see what numbers the new star can rack up.

Thanos reportedly going to reclassify to 2025 and enroll at IMG, then off to USC. Hopefully those reports end up being untrue.

I’ve never agreed with linemen reclassifying. They’re the positions most dependent on physical development and maturity.

I'll make a perma-ban bet with anyone that Thanos plays for LSU. I am that certain that we will do whatever it takes to sign him.

Weren't you the one saying Jonah williams was coming to lsu?

A guy on here who is friends with hankton is saying he is already reclassifying and has an nil deal worked out with usc.

Now things can change. I'm sure lsu is going to do everything in their power to keep him in state. Stewart has been leaving bread crumbs about this for awhile.

Tobi Haastrup could end up a top-100 prospect.

Friedman: FACT. There aren’t many prospects who can run a 10.7-second 100m. There are even fewer who are 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds. Tobi Haastrup is one of those few and he’s in the midst of his first football season ever. The defensive lineman from Texas has no experience playing football but his exceptional athletic abilities have made him a potentially dominant prospect. Haastrup’s explosiveness off the edge, his strong play and seemingly relentless motor have helped him rack up multiple sacks and tackles for a loss in his first games. He’s also lined up at defensive tackle and that versatility could go a long way at the next level.

Levenson: FACT. It might make for the most unforeseen rankings development in the 2025 cycle, but I can certainly see the new four-star prospect ending up in the top 100. The film from his first game displayed an eye-opening amount of speed and burst from the edge rusher position. In the range of 6-foot-4 and weighing 240 pounds, he absolutely has the size and frame to project as a premier rusher at the next level.

With a track background, Haastrup has a natural get off and explosion in his game that not only shows up on the snap of the ball but also in pursuit of a quarterback or ball carrier. While this is not an exact comparison, how he gets off the ball is quite similar to what he we have seen from former five-star prospect Dylan Stewart in the first two weeks of his freshman season at South Carolina.

With his skillset, and knowing he has had zero football experience to this point, I have high hopes for what Haastrup can look like in the future.

Although this stance generally makes sense in theory, it's kinda silly in this case.

Obviously, the main reason a kid reclassifies is to hopefully get to the pros and get paid a year earlier. For Stewart, that means eligibility for the 2028 NFL Draft (following the 2027 CFB season) instead of having to wait until 2029. Let's say he does reclassify: That puts him on campus as a true freshman for the 2025 season and makes him draft-eligible after the 2027 season. Even if you don't think (or think it's unlikely) he'd be an early declare, waiting another year (until after year 4 of college) still gets him into the 2029 NFL Draft - the same as if he was an early declare without reclassifying.

So what's the difference? Instead of spending the next 4yrs (after the 2024-25 school year) in college, with college strength and nutrition programs and college coaching, working toward a college degree (or two), he'd have to spend one of those years in HS. And, of course, there's also the very real chance he *could* be good enough to early declare even after reclassifying - there are plenty of guys who are superstars as true sophomores (e.g. ja'marr chase... or, if you want DL examples, Jalen Carter, ed oliver, Nick Bosa, myles garrett, jadeveon clowney, etc) and would've easily been 1st rounders if they could've come out. But he can only do that if he reclassifies.

Even if 4 years post 2024-25 school year *still* isn't enough to get him ready for the NFL, he has 5 years to use his 4 years of eligibility (i.e. he can redshirt). In other words: The only case where reclassifying would actually screw him up is if he needs 4 years PLUS a redshirt year even without reclassifying. If that's the case, then reclassifying isn't even the issue in the first place - he just isn't the guy we thought, for other reasons.

Finally, you note (correctly) that DL is a position very dependent upon physical development. While that is certainly the case, have you SEEN jahkeem stewart? The notion that he wouldn't be able to get to where he needs to be physically if he reclassified is patently absurd - he could probably suit up for us this coming saturday and not be overwhelmed. I'd take his level of physical development over any of our current 2025 DT/EDGE commits, and he's *clearly* ahead of where our 2024 DL signees were at this point in the 2024 cycle - so if you weren't worried about dom mckinley or gabe reliford, there's absolutely no reason to worry about jahkeem's ability to make it work in the 2025 class.

His motor is just as impressive as his athletic traits. I didn’t see him give up on one play.
