So let me get this straight, when we do not have the highest rated recruiting class then "the recruiting ranking systems do not mean anything", "I trust the coaches in finding the players", "it is all nonsense". But when we are getting all kinds of "5 star" players to (possibly) commit, then that is what we base future national championships on?? Shouldn't the logic apply with every year? Sorry, this drooling over high school kids is worse then when we use to make fun of Texas and USC for doing the same thing.

Who would you rather have as a dual threat QB for LSU: Shep or Tyrik Rollison? I thought so.
We're not drooling over 5-stars. We're drooling over mega-talented players likely to sign with LSU who happen to be 5-stars. Michael Ford is not a 5-star on Rivals. But I wouldn't care if he was a 1 star. He is a beast.
I admit I drool over 18 y/o's. So what? I'll be drooling over 22 y/o's this coming April, and you probably will be , too. I want LSU & the Saints to have the best possible talent year in and year out and make my wish list. Most on my wishlist for LSU may sign with LSU. Wish fulfillment makes my mouth water.

James Laurinaitis OSU - 3*
Malcolm Jenkins OSU - 3*
Tyson Jackson LSU - 2*
All potential 1st round NFL picks in April
Myron Rolle FSU - 5*
Matthew Stafford UGA - 5*
Taylor Mays USC - 5*
Also all potential 1st round NFL picks in April
As you can see, the recruiting sites don't get it right for every kid. While there is a strong correlation between star ratings and talent, it's still possible assemble a low rated class that turns out to be great in hindsight (just ask Boise St.).
So yes, it is possible to argue (coherently) that one has a good class despite a lower rating. I'll take a 3* that burns to play for LSU any day over a 5* who is all about self.
