Restoring grill grates

I have a decent grill but the grates are just a bit rusty. Was thinking to either wire wheel them down or sandblast (have booth tools) and then what do I do? Heat paint sounds kinda toxic for food, so maybe just heat up and season like a cast iron skillet with oil?

Your stated method with work. Do not use paint on the grill grates.

My usual restoration method is to light charcoal under them, steel brush once hot af, and place chicken thighs on top to season.

Id put the wire wheel to them and then oil. New grates aren’t all that much either.

Cast iron is really the only way to go for grates but they are not all that way. But cast iron grates are best treated like a cast iron skillet, clean after use and oil lightly.
I just heat the grill real hot and let it run at 500+ for a bit and then clean them up with a wire grill brush. Spray with a cheap oil and go from there.
The best thing I have found is to get the grill real hot after every use, clean with a brush, and spray lightly with oil to store.

What type of grates? I have cast grates, when they get a little rusty I just lightly sand them to remove rust, rinse them, and dry them. Then I season them like any cast iron pot, a thin layer of oil with a high smoke point in an oven or propane grill at 450-500 for an hour.
If it is cast you have here is a good tutorial from Lodge on restoring a rusted cast skillet. The same principle applies.
