I currently have a PW, AW and 54 degree in my bag. Been thinking about getting a 60 degree. I’ve heard it’s hard to hit so I wanted to get some input on it before buying. Would 60 degree be better out of sand than my 54?

You could get a 58.

What kind of sand do you have?

If it’s thick and fluffy having more “bounce” will help.

What kind of fairways and green surrounds do you have?

If the are “tight” less bounce would help.

I’ve always had one. I rarely take a full swing with it though. Actually never do. I’ll take 3/4, 1/2 swings. Use it a lot around the ground if I need to get up and over a bunker are if I’m below the lip of a green and need to get it up and over it but need it to stop.

A Lob Wedge is like a beautiful woman who turns into a witch.

You're happy when you get her and your more happy when she leaves...

I will say that I really love my 58* Edison 2.0 wedge.

I have a PW, AW, 53,57, and 60. I only chip with the 60 when I have to, such as a short sided pin. Where I really like it is for short bunker shots. I like to change the club I use out of the bunker, depending on how far I want to carry, as opposed to changing my swing. For me, the 60 goes 10 yards out of the bunker, give or take, depending on sand conditions.

a buddy made a 64 for me...when I initially set up it looks like you'll hit yourself in the face with the ball...

took me a couple of years to get used to it enough to put it in the bag...

Depends on what type of player you are and if you have room for another club but it could open up different options around the greens.

I don't always hit my lob wedge 170 yards but when I do, it's from a green side bunker.

Gaps matter more.

I have a 50, 52 that’s bent to a 53 and a 58.

Covers 115 to 75 pretty well.

if it’s straight OB or into a lake…that’s maker’s stock shot.

I’m trying to forget about yesterday.

Going back to OP.

Be sure to get a midsize grip.
It will help with the physics.

Basically with the midsize grip you will be able to pound the ground harder or throw it further after a really bad miss.

I thought “how bad could it be”, so i thought I’d see how trying to play The Judge from the Orange would be yesterday.

I saw, oh I saw. I’ll be having flashbacks for weeks.

Put a layer of duct tape on before the two-sided tape when you re-grip.

Helps cushion the hands better so those ground strikes don’t hurt your hands.

Always play forward.

You will be closer after each tee shot.

It’s science. Trust the science.

Tips for playing The Judge

1 - don’t try and reach any of the par 5’s in 2, other than 15. That isn’t worth it either btw, but you won’t be able to help yourself.

2 - If you’re on the wrong side of a ridge, and you will be just accept the 3 putt and make sure you get it over the ridge(s) and yes there can be more than one. Unless you can make the 10-20 footer coming back.

3 - when you’re dropping on #5 after hitting your tee shot in the water (yes landing in the middle of the fairway it will bounce right and get wet) and you look over at the 6th green and think “man that has to be the nastiest green on the course” it isn’t.

4 - when you hit it in the grunge, and you will just drop one in the general vicinity unless you saw exactly where it went, even so you’ll probably find 3 before one of them is yours, if you find yours. Don’t try and hack it out, again not kidding, you’ll hurt yourself.

5 - on 3 of the par 3’s there are drop zones. It takes fewer balls to use those. Unless the pin is on the left side of the green on 12 and you’re on the right. If you’re going to try and make it, just put someone at the bottom of the green to keep it from going in the water. Not kidding, if you’re using the drop zone isn’t a bad idea then either.

6 - Don’t play with the gators on 15, again not kidding. One of them is pretty big.

7 - if you drink, have a designated driver. This course will make an alcoholic out of anyone. If you’re not asking the cart girl for hard liquor by #8 you must be playing well. If you aren’t look on the bright side, the back 9 is worse and enough booze will kill the memory.

The Judge
Played there in 2001 after 9/11. Teed off on a Thursday at 12:30, only finished 16 holes. Brutally slow. Same with Oxmoor in Birmingham. Be patient.

Times have changed. I teed off yesterday at 9:40, let 2 singles play through and still finished at 12:30. Marshals are constantly moving on the course now. Usually see them at least twice during a round after teeing off.

Weekends are slower typically due to the out of town groups.

Thanks for all the inside info. I’m excited to go play it. My buddies and I are planning on hitting all the RTJ courses in the next few months.

Pass on Greenville and Ross Bridge IMO. I just really don’t like Greenville’s layout and condition wasn’t as good when I was there in July. Ross Bridge isn’t worth the cost, play Purcell Farms (not an RTJ) instead. My favorite course in the state, if it was as close to my house as Capital Hill is I’d have joined there. I could walk to my house from the course now if i wanted to.

If you don’t have a trail card, get one. Pays for itself on the first trip.
