Last weekend, fishing the rocks on the backside of Racoon Island out of Dularge/Cocodrie, we look up and dropping in to the island are four bigass pink birds. Sharpest color I’ve ever seen, and I was swearing up and down they looked bigger and more pink than any Roseate Spoonbill I’ve ever seen.

They ended up landing on the bayside of the island. We were going to go around and look closer, but we were in the trout pretty thick and up against the clock for when one of our guys needed to get back. Ended up not making it over there. Reconciled it was probably Spoonbills, but then we did some research and found this article. There is a paywall, but still wanted to link so you can google if ya want.

LINK

The article it appears to say that people have seen 4 “American Flamingos” on Whiskey Island, which is right next door to where we were. Had never heard of them before, and thought they were exclusives in Africa. But apparently there is a species in South America to the Caribbean that may have been pushed up into FL and then LA during the various hurricanes.

Anyways it was cool, wish we would have taken the time to explore further. Anyone else seen them out around there?

There was one last year that was one confirmed at the Cam Prairie Refuge. Had been displaced by one of the hurricanes. I think I remember another one around the SE end of the state that was also spotted last year.

You are correct. It was was a juvenile and was photographed by several birders. At that time there were only six previous confirmed sightings in LA.

a few were spotted around Pensacola after Idalia. One got killed by a blue heron, and I think one got chomped up by a snapping turtle.

Yeah that’s kind of a big deal One showed up last year and people were all over it. If you can, get some pictures and a location. It’s a very rare bird for Louisiana

No doubt. It was wild. Every time things have slowed down this week I’ve gotten pissed thinking about how we didn’t go take pics.
