My biggest problem with our Def this year was the ridicously high amount of "confusion" among our defensive players. It seemed like every play there was at least one guy with his hands up in the "what the hell am I supposed to do" position. I definitely think Chavis will eliminate that problem.

He also brings a tremendous amount of respect (among his peers), knowledge of the SEC, and a pretty solid track record with him.

Is he a conservative DC or an aggressive DC??? Well that topic can be argued forever. I'm just happy that our defense will look a HELL of a lot more "In Sync" and disciplined this upcoming year.

I think we find out next year the football IQ of our players. While the masses spent all year crucifying our DC's, I don't think the possibility occurred to ANYONE that maybe, just maybe, the players weren't the most football savvy people in the world. I am not saying this is the case, but throwing it out there as an alternate theory. I mean...the coaches coached the same stuff all year, and in game 12, the players STILL didn't get it?? Maybe the players are the ones that aren't geniuses. Just sayin..

I did, and moved on quickly. It is hard for the players to be in the wrong when the coaches don't call in the play until the opposing offense is set. That gives our players a total of 1-10 seconds to get the play call in, get themselves in the right position, and then prepare for the play.

By the 5th game this year, the players realized this wasn't working for two reasons:

1. They didn't have time to get in position.
2. The play call was poor.

The coaches put these players in a position to fail. There is no other reason. That's it.

if thats what you think, how ironic is it that almost the whole D didn't know what to do?

Agreed. I've never believed in playing "matchup" defense. Get your 11 best guys on the field and play a coverage based on down and distance.

This shuffling of people in and out is just ridiculous.

I know things....that have been told to me from pretty reliable sources....LOL

Your theory is solid.

So, ignore the crap that was told to you after your post.

Did the coaches share some of the blame? Certainly. It does take two to tango, however.

That is all I am saying. I think we went the whole season and it never once was suggested here that maybe the players were part of the problem. The "in" thing to do was bash the coaches.

Its the coaches job to teach it to the players so they know what to do.

Thats the job title.

A kid fails Algebra class. It is automatically the teacher's fault, since making the kid understand algebra is what he/she is paid to do? Maybe the kid just isn't bright enough. Maybe the kid doesn't have self-discipline. Can't automatically assign blame to the teacher, just because she is paid to make them understand.

I like the hire. I'd have preferred Vic Koening as a younger, newer face to the SEC, and one with HC ambitions (strong motivation to build up the resume a la Pelini). Charely Strong and Nick Holt are others on my wish list, although they were surely unobtainable. So overall, I'd grade the Chavis signing as a B or a B+. I just hope that after 15 years at UT, he's capable of adapting to a new school, program, coach, city, fan base, etc., etc. He'll surely command the respect of our guys, what with his resume and all ... plus you gotta like his success at developing linebackers over the years at Tennessee.

Yeah, those morons.

They should have taught Johnson not to hit someone ten seconds after the play was over, or Alem to kick a football after the play was over.

It's in their job title.

This is a good point, and while I don't think it can be argued that the coordinators did not suck pretty hard core, I made the point earlier this year that perhaps our players were just not very football smart. At some point the players have to take some responsibility--how much, all of us outsiders will never know. It could be a lot, it could be very minimal, but it has to be some.

We seem to have some guys on here who think the players are irrelevant. Maybe we can just roll out the coordinators' career averages, and the players would never even have to step on the field.

I agree. It is funny, though, how nobody wanted to blame the defensive players, but a lot of people were very quick to throw Jarrett Lee under a bulldozer. Slightly different comparison, but still...

It could be partly the players for not understanding. But that's when you have to bring the game down to the players' level. Too many coaches try to over complicate things I'm sure.
