Why are democrats opposing the bill banning them from voting in federal elections?

quote:

House Democratic leadership is bringing out the big guns against a Republican bill set to be voted on next week that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: House Republicans have made non-citizen voting in federal elections — for which there is no evidence of a widespread phenomenon — a marquee issue going into the 2024 campaign.

If there’s just a little bit of fraud, then there’s no need to address it.

Opposition to this bill tells you where a determinative number of Democrat votes are coming from.

If there’s no evidence for it, what’s wrong with passing a law that will guarantee that it stays that way.

I think we all agree that Yahoo is a mouthpiece for Dems. They answered a while back

quote:

This bill will require voters to produce documentation of citizenship in person which is easier said than done right now.

States are in the process of implementing the real ID program, a federal mandate that requires states to issue more secure I DS and driver's licenses, which would allow people to carry proof of citizenship easily on their person.

But the current deadline to switch over to real ID is May 2025.

So requiring it to vote in 2024 would disenfranchise huge numbers of people.

In the meantime, just under half of American citizens have passports and the other forms of proof of citizenship like a civil birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or a naturalization certificate like this one are incredibly unwieldy, not to mention very hard to replace if anything happens to them.

Still, the debate over a national standard for participation in federal elections is entirely reasonable and most Americans do support some form of voter ID requirement.

Here is the Leftist outlet Democracy Docket doing the same in May

quote:

The Movement Advancement Project, an independent, nonprofit think tank, released a report in 2022 detailing the barriers caused by citizens who do not have a photo ID or documents to prove citizenship, especially those in minority groups. According to the report, nearly 30 million people — or one in eight adults — lack a valid driver’s license. Black, Hispanic and transgender individuals are more likely to not have one.

The report also estimates that 15 to 18 million adults in the U.S. don’t have access to documents proving their birth or citizenship because of a variety of factors, including complicated documentation requirements, expensive fees, limited availability of ID services, confusing state policies and discrimination.

Don't really exist for the most part, so I gave you more direct sources to actual liberal/leftist outlets.

So they're not getting a new job anywhere, registering for school, buying alcohol, tobacco, checking out library books, renting cars, flying domestically or international, opening bank accounts, buying crypto, etc, either?

Life must be rough.

That's a them problem. Because 5% of the population can't get their shite together, we open the door to fraud?

frick that

FACT: there are US citizens who are eligible to vote and do not carry proof-of-citizenship.

The goal of this bill is to suppress their votes.

That’s nothing more than another Dimorat method of securing illegal voting. No one in this country who is a legal citizen doesn’t have a valid form of id. If they don’t, then they shouldn’t be allowed to vote just like they’re not allowed to do many other things without an id
