Has anyone here ever done the great loop?

I’ve never done it and had never heard of it until about a month ago. My parents are retired and my dad is looking at buying a boat specifically for the Great Loop. He may do it in segments but he has been all about this for the last few months.
If anyone has done it, any advice?

Have VERY deep pockets. Between fuel, dock fees, lock fees, and the maintenance and repairs on a boat big and comfortable enough to make that trip, he's going to spend a small fortune.

They’ve got that and lots of time.
So much for any inheritance I guess

Is your dad a skilled Captain? This isn't taking a pontoon out on the lake. Navigation, operating the vessel in tight quarters in high winds without bumping it into million dollar yachts that are also docked there, being able to make repairs on the fly, etc. It's harder than it looks. It's definitely not an undertaking that I'd recommend for a novice boater.

Absolutely this. I went down a YouTube rabbit hole on the great loop last year. There are ton of videos out there by people who were doing it and give good advice. But this quote pretty much sums up a common theme that runs across all the videos.

Yeah this is pretty much what I get from it as well. No my dad is not a skilled captain but he has experience with larger vessels.
I’m not sure he’s up to it but I think he may do the Chicago/Great Lakes portion and that will scratch the itch for him.
